Williams, Robert (Bob) C.
72, passed away at home in Mesa, AZ on June 23, 2016. Mr. Williams was born and raised in the Blue Grass region of Kentucky. In 1967, he graduated from Western Kentucky University with a degree in business. Before moving to Phoenix, he held an administrator position in the Kentucky TB hospital system. After joining a Memphis based skilled nursing corporation in 1970, he was appointed Administrator of its Phoenix facility. In 1971, he met the founders of Surgicenter, Inc., the nation's first freestanding ambulatory surgery center where he held the position of Executive Director. Bob worked with Surgicenter's Founders, Dr. Reed and Dr. Ford, to further the acceptance and expansion of the same day surgery concept across the United States. He relocated to California in 1983 and became the Director of Surgery Center Operations of the newly formed corporation Alternacare, Inc. In 1991, he founded a surgery center corporation and served as Director of Development until its sale in 1998. After a short retirement, he formed his own successful healthcare consulting firm which he managed until 2013. Bob was active in numerous organizations throughout his career. He served as the Executive Director of the nation's first ambulatory surgical association, later served as a board member and its President (2002-2004). He was also a founder of the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care, served on its board until 2012, and continued to work as a facility surveyor until 2013 when he retired. He was privileged to hold the title of Secretary on the board of the International Association of Ambulatory Surgery, headquartered in Belgium, from 2002-2012. He and his wife loved to travel, and during his term on the board they had numerous opportunities to travel to Europe. Bob is survived by his loving wife Paula, sons Jon Colby and Matthew, daughter Leah, brother Michael, and daughter-in-law Rory Higgins. Visitation will be held at Mariposa Gardens, 400 S. Power Rd., Mesa, AZ, 85206 on Sunday June 26 from 3-5pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society
