George E. Freiburghaus Obituary
Freiburghaus, George E.
George E. Freiburghaus passed away just 3 hours shy of his 97th birthday, surrounded by family. He was born in Saginaw, Michigan, May 30, 1920, to Ernest and Elsie (Thalman) Freiburghaus. In his youth, through his passion for scouting and music, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout and scholarships to the Interlochen music camp and the Curtis Institute of Music. As a master of the Bass Viol, he was invited to join the Kansas City Symphony, but the war interceded and he joined the U.S. Navy. Following the war he returned to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he married his sweetheart Elsie. They started their 65 year marriage adventure in Helena, Montana, where they operated the "Town Talk", famous for hand-ground hamburgers and homemade ice cream shakes. George also was the founding conductor of the Helena Symphonette. In 1953, Guy Taylor, conductor of the Phoenix Symphony, invited George to join the orchestra as Principal Bass. With their children Craig and Georgia, they moved to Phoenix and opened the Trend House, hardware, gifts and toys. While continuing his musical career he made on more change, selling the store and joining New York Life Insurance Company from which he retired. Throughout his life he and Elsie traveled throughout the U.S. and around the world. Fishing was another passion and there isn't a fish he didn't try to catch. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Ernestine and Elizabeth, his beloved wife Elsie, and sons Brent and Craig. He is survived by his daughter Georgia Mastin (Dave) grandson Eric Newlin (Kim), granddaughters Sommer and Nicole and grandson David Newlin (Darcy) grandchildren Ryan, Zoe and Andrew. He is also survived by his loving companion of the past 6 years, Rita Nash. In his own words: "I have gotten everything I have ever wanted in life - traveling, music, family, friends and love." A memorial service will be at Skirm Auditorium at 2:00pm on Tuesday, June 27, 2017. In lieu of flowers please feel free to memorialize George with a contribution to Curtis Institute of Music www.curtis.edu or www.hov.org.
