Bonnie Lake Notice
Bonnie J. Lake passed away on February 18, 2018 in Cleveland, Ohio. She held positions in the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's flute and piccolo sections from 1957 until her retirement in 2004. Miss Lake also taught flute at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University from 1957-2005 and Goucher College from 1962-2000. She was a member of several orchestras prior to her BSO appointment, including the Indianapolis, North Carolina, and Akron Symphony Orchestras. Born on April 22, 1930 in Cleveland, OH to the late Frederic and Clara Haskins Lake, she earned three degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory; additional studies included Tanglewood, the Mozarteum Somer Akademie, the Ècole Internationale d'Èté, and the Cleveland Institute of Music. She studied with numerous prominent 20th century musicians including flutists Maurice Sharp, Robert Willoughby, William Kincaid, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Georges Laurent and conductors Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, and many others. Miss Lake's former students have positions in orchestras and universities across the U.S. and abroad. She is survived by several cousins, including Evelyn Lake Lyman and James Gordon Lyman of Seville, Spain; Sharon Lake Buehner and Douglas Lake of Medina, OH; Brian Lake of Willoughby, OH; and her devoted BSO family. A memorial service will take place on Monday, May 21, 2018 at 11 a.m. in the Lobby of the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. Memorial gifts in Bonnie Lake's name may be sent to the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, 1212 Cathedral Street, Baltimore, MD 21201.
