Doris Smoot Notice
Doris Anne Smoot of Glen Burnie, MD, passed away in the hands of the Lord Wednesday, August 8. She was born November 19, 1932 in Baltimore, to the late Silas Robinson and Thelma Merchant Pettigen. Doris was lovingly raised by her mother and the late Archie Pettigen. Affectionately known as Sis, she gave her life to Christ in 1945 and joined Calvary Baptist Church at the original Biddle Street church site. She worked faithfully throughout the years, serving in several positions, including church treasurer for 39 years. In 2011, she was recognized as Calvary's longest serving member, supporting three pastors and two interim pastors. Doris graduated from Frederick Douglas Senior High in 1952. She married Thomas Smoot (her prom date) in 1955. Through the years, Doris also worked as a housekeeper, a substitute teacher, a cook and bookkeeper at the family-owned Smoot's Place restaurant in Baltimore, and a Cub Scout den mother; but most importantly, she was a loving and dedicated wife and mother. Her quiet confidence, generous spirit, and delicious cooking will be missed. Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Silas and Donald Robinson; and her sister, Betty Miller. She leaves to cherish her memory: her loving husband, Thomas; four sons, Stephen, Sterling, Stanley (Darylle) and Scott; a devoted daughter, Stacey; twelve grandchildren; three great-grands; one sister, Gloria Coleman; and a host of other dear relatives and friends. Visitation: Tuesday, Aug 14th, 5 to 8 p.m., Calvary Baptist Church, 3911 Garrison Blvd., Baltimore. Home Going Celebration: Wednesday, Aug 15th, Calvary Baptist Church. Wake: 10:30 a.m.; Funeral: 11 a.m.
