Michael Canon Obituary

Michael Moyer Canon was born June 10th, 1941 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. He graduated from Gilman School in Baltimore in 1958, and four years later, on June 10th, 1962, he graduated from Williams College, had his 21st birthday, and got engaged to the love of his life, Susan Eleanor McEldowney on the same day. He began his career with the Koppers Company in Pittsburgh, then moved on to IBM in Indianapolis and then Honeywell in Baltimore in computer and software sales, where he became the General Manager of the Baltimore and Washington regional market division. He subsequently became Vice President of Carey Machinery in Baltimore.

With a fervent desire to own his own business, he moved his family to Jacksonville, FL in 1979 to start Canon Safety & Health. Canon Safety grew rapidly, attracting a Fortune 500 acquisition suitor a mere nine years later, in 1988. The selling of Canon Safety launched his next two career adventures with his wife and family in 1993; the starting of The Eggemoggin Reach Bed & Breakfast in Brooksville, ME, an award winning B&B written up in USA Today, and numerous travel guides, and he started Brooksville Associates, a successful mergers & acquisitions firm specializing in the industrial safety and fire markets.

During these years, Mike and his wife enjoyed living back in the Jacksonville beaches area for half the year and the coast of Maine in Brooksville the other half. In 2005, after selling the Bed & Breakfast, they settled into retirement in Ponte Vedra, FL.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Susan; and his three sons, Mark Canon and Michael Canon of Lake Wylie, SC and Rip Canon of Ponte Vedra, FL; and his five grandchildren, Nate, Samantha, Jack, Luke, and Nicholas Canon.

In lieu of flowers, Michael requested donations be sent to the Gilman School in Baltimore, MD.

College roomie, lifelong friend, ever loyal, truly good. Worshiped his wife Susie and family. A man for all seasons, a profile in courage. Most of all, an inspiration for continuing laughs and fun.

Great friend, human being and fraternity brother.

Mike: You brought endless pleasure to those fortunate enough to know you with your sense of humor, infectious laughter, affable manner and genuine respect for others. I can not recall any time after we were together or communicated that I did not feel good when we parted.

You lived life to the fullest, and in keepin on keepin on with clear joy in your heart, in the face of multiple challenges for many years, are a powerful example for all of us who are aging to live every moment ever thankful for the opportunity to have it . And there is no doubt that hooking up with Susie was one of your finest moments in terms of your happiness and the joy you both provided to your friends.
