Ronald Siegrist Obituary

Ronald A. Siegrist, 93, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, November 4, 2018. Ron was born October 31, 1925, on Wolfe Street in Baltimore and resided in Baltimore for most of his life. After graduating from Baltimore City College, he served in the US Navy for 3 ½ years as an Electrician's Mate during WWII. After the Navy, Ron worked and played basketball for Martin Marietta. He turned down an offer to play for the Baltimore Bullets and instead enrolled in the University of Maryland, where he graduated second in his class with a degree in Electrical Engineering. During his time at Maryland, he was a member of the men's varsity basketball team. At 6'4", he was the starting center on the team. His first job out of college was at Westinghouse, during which time he earned his MBA from George Washington. Ron married Julia Mae Elliott in 1954 and they had 2 daughters. He spent the bulk of his career running his own electronics company, National Circuits. He retired in 1987, which allowed Ron plenty of time to pursue his many hobbies; including tennis, boating, and restoring antique cars. This last hobby proved his favorite, as he and his wife, Julie, spent countless hours attending car shows all over the country, usually in their honeymoon car – a 1952 98 Oldsmobile Convertible. Ron also enjoyed attending numerous games, dance recitals, plays and graduations, as he watched his grandchildren grow up. He was a "Snowbird" and spent his winters in Punta Gorda, FL. Ron was a wonderful son, husband, father and grandfather! Ron is survived by two daughters, Susan Siegrist Barton and Carol Siegrist Caballero, as well as five grandchildren, Andrew Barton, Lacey Barton, Paige Barton, Cameron Caballero, and Tyler Caballero. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2018 at 11:30 am at St. Paul's School Chapel located at 11152 Falls Road, Brooklandville, MD 21022. Donations may be made to The St. Paul's Schools.

It doesn't seem so long ago when we saw Ron the last time at the Olds Nationals in Gettysburg PA in the summer of 2018. We were lucky to have spent time with Ron two other times that same year. We spent March 13th and 14th with Ron at his Punta Gorda home in Florida so we could do a trip out to the Boca Grande Lighthouse with him. Then again at the Oldsmar Festival at the end of March in Florida when Ron actually drove there from his winter home in Punta Gorda. Although they were good times, we missed having Julie with us. We have so many wonderful memories with both Ron and Julie. So often it was also with Roger and Toni Peroutka at the Oldsmobile Nationals. Ron and Julie are missed, but the memories we had with them live on in our hearts.

Ron and his Hatteras were pier neighbors for several of his final boating years. One spring they brought an extra car to BYC and then took off in another care for the Eastern shore to pick up their boat. As they returned they found they had forgotten the keys for the spare car! I loaned Ron my Cadillac to make the pick up. When he returned he of course thanked me but commented on how easily I let them use my car. I told Ron that at worse I would end up with one of his classic cars! He was a fine Neighbor!

Met Ron a few times at the National Antique Olds Meets; the last one was in Pennsylvania in 2017. His enthusiasm was infectious and he could tell a great story. We shall all miss him; his obituary was very interesting as I had no idea of what he had done. He leaves a lasting legacy with his family. Our condolences! Rick and Stacy Winn

To Ron's beloved daughters and grandchildren, I offer my sincere condolences on Ron's sudden passing. I just spoke with him last week on the phone. Naturally, he was inquiring about an area car show. I spent many hours sitting with Ron at various shows. He never got tired of extolling the virtues of his glorious blue, 1952 Oldsmobile '98' convertible known as 'Betsy.' Ron purchased the '52 Olds BRAND NEW from a Baltimore Dealer. He also showed his eye-catching 1966 Oldsmobile '98' convertible...'Big Red'. Ron restored both cars a least twice, along with many other vehicles. Ron was a gifted gentleman that could converse about any topic. Car shows will not be the same without Ron Siegrist!
