William Grafton Anderson III Notice
On July 3, 2018 William Grafton Anderson III beloved husband of Wanda Waldorf Anderson; dear father of Cary William Anderson and the late David Steven Anderson; beloved son of the late Gladys Dorothy (nee Berry) and William Grafton Anderson Jr. William Anderson was a distinguished Maryland Bay Pilot for 42 years. One of his greatest joys was being accepted into the Association of Maryland Bay Pilots. A few of his adventures included an unscheduled trip to France and another to Panama, due to a hurricane in Norfolk, where he piloted a ship through the Panama Canal with little warning and the Panamanians questioned if he was possibly a US spy. Once on a French ship he criticized its engine and the French ship's captain ran off the bridge and returned with two swords and challenged Captain Anderson to a duel. After a long moment the French captain laughed and apologized for the engine problems. Even with moments like that, Captain Anderson enjoyed the cultures he would experience on ships from all over the world. He adored his family and loved spending time with them at Art Donovan's country club and at The Atlantis in Ocean City. He had memorable vacations including one to Los Angeles. In retirement he got bitten by the film bug and enjoyed being a film extra on various films including Major League 2 where he got to stand on the pitcher's mound at Camden Yards. He was also an associate producer on his son's film, Extra School. Service and interment private. Please omit flowers. Memorials in his name may be made to Make-A Wish Foundation, The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, The National Ataxia Foundation or The Kennedy Krieger Foundation.
