Miss Wilner introduced me to the wonders of reading and the Dewey Decimal System. I can still see her sitting at her desk, welcoming her Lida Lee Tall children to the library and suggesting new books to read. I spent the second & third grades under her expert tutelage, then my family moved to Hawaii. We corresponded for some years, and the letter I remember most vividly was when she said I had become old enough to appreciate "The Hobbit." Naturally, I went to the Honolulu Public Library that day and checked it out. Miss Wilner was a shining star!

She was a special person with unending patience and a genuine love for children. The world is a sadder place now without her.

I only had the pleasure of Isabel's friendship for the last 15 years. Her apartment in Towson and her house in Tunkhannock were filled from floor to ceiling with...books! She was an inspiration as a lover of literature, a teacher, and a writer. May her memory continue to be a blessing to all who knew her.

I first "met" Isabel in 1989 when my editor, Donna Brooks, at Dutton Children's Books sent me Isabel's manuscript, "B is for Bethlehem" and asked me if I'd be interested in illustrating it. I was charmed by the reverential yet playful tone of the piece and the lyrical quality of the writing. Illustrating the book was a delightful pleasure, as was meeting Isabel in person when she came to San Francisco to attend ALA a few years later. Isabel will live on in her books, in the many people whose lives she touched, and in my heart.

I never met Isabel in person, but exchanged Christmas cards with her for many years after I had the privilege of illustrating A Garden Alphabet, one of her children's picture books. She was witty, generous and so friendly to me, a young illustrator living way out in California. I will miss her!

I am eternally grateful to Miss Wilner for introducing me to some of my favorite young adult/juvenile literature that I still read 40 years after graduating from Lida Lee Tall

As one of the first members of the Poetry Troupe, I recall her fondly. More than 35 years later, I still can't call her anything but Miss Wilner. A warm person who made the small Lida Lee Tall library fun and always loved reading to students.
What is also gratifying to know is she spent her life doing what she wanted to do while imparting her love for literature to so many people. Lida Lee Tall was a very special place, Miss Wilner enlivened it greatly.

I remember vividly Miss Wilner and the library at Lida Lee Tall. She is my fondest memory of my years there as a student . I learned to love books and reading from her, and it was always a highlight to have her read to us. Her kindness, love of literature, creativity, and joy in teaching children lives on and will continue for generations.

What a loss -- for children, for storytellers, for poets everywhere! Isabel Wilner was legendary at Towson University for her warmth, creativity and gifts as a poet & teacher. My mother, Mary Taylor, was a professor of children's literature at Towson & she often spoke about Isabel's clever pedagogical ideas & devotion to Lida Lee Tall School & to children's literature. Her books & work show a profound understanding of the human spirit and how to nurture that creative spark from earliest years of childhood on...in sadness & joy in Isabel's gifts to the world and to the world's children
