Helen & Joyce 1987

Joyce Lauenstein

Helen was my mother-in-law and my friend. I learned to enjoy many things with her - early bird movies, day bus trips to new and interesting places, Chinese food, Christmas celebrations with family, night blooming cereus that filled the air with fragrance in her greenhouse. She is my role model for what a mother-in-law should be - available but not intrusive, caring, warm, able to give advice but only when asked. Helen was a great source of knowledge on many things, but especially anything to do with nature. She was also mechanically challenged, as she would freely admit - she never did learn how to pump gas at the self-service pump and computers remained a mystery to her. That was just part of her charm. I loved her and I will miss her.

So many happy memories we shared through the art of Bonsai and general love of nature and its wonders. Several trees she generously gave me will live on in her memory as she also will. My sincere sympathy to her family.
