Carol S. Sebold

CAMDEN - Carol Shupp Sebold, 71, died peacefully June 7, 2010, at her home in Camden. She was born in 1939 in Toledo, Ohio, and was educated there. After graduating from college, she taught high school art in Toledo, Ohio, which is where she also began exhibiting at local and regional art shows. Her children, Robin and Scott were born in Toledo, Ohio. In 1973, Carol and her family traveled cross-country in their RV discovering mid-coast Maine and settling in Camden. Carol's watercolors are inspired by the breathtaking scenery of the Maine coast. She captured coastal fishing villages, schooners at rest and the quiet coves. Her love of Maine is reflected and brought to fresh life through her work. Her paintings have been selected for many juried shows and shown in galleries throughout the eastern United States and the Caribbean. In 1988, she was inducted into the DeVilbiss High School Hall of Fame. Carol was always generous with her time and her love. She was active in the community and donated her time and talent to many projects. Her artwork can be seen on the walls of the Camden Town Office, Camden Public Library, Camden Snow Bowl and at Sharpie's Shack. She was never too busy, oh she was always busy, to find time for her family and friends and the community where she lived. Carol taught throughout her career, sharing her artistic vision and helping her students harness their own talents. She taught high school classes in Ohio and in southern Michigan, and also taught at William A. Farnsworth Art Museum, the WoodenBoat School in Brooklin, and onboard the windjammers, Roseway and Angelique. She was recently associated with Crystal Cruise Line, touring the world, teaching and lecturing. Carol taught many workshops, including memorable classes with her friends when C'est ce Bon, the French artiste, would appear. She was an active member of American Society of Marine Artists. Carol celebrated every day and shared with all from her more than generous heart. Her adventurous spirit was large and her enthusiasm for life contagious. Carol left us all too soon but will remain with us through wonderful memories, shared adventures, and by holding her close to our hearts. Life was her canvas. A special person remembered and a beautiful life honored. She is survived by her loving partner, Mac Murphy; her daughter and son-in-law, Robin Sebold and Rutley Chalk; her son and daughter-in-law, Scott Sebold and Kimber Lee Clark; her sisters, Donna Cherry and her husband, Frank, of Toledo, Ohio, and Jane O'Connor and her husband, Paul, of Florida; her brother, Dan Shupp of Millbury, Ohio; and her large loving family of friends far and wide. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, June 25, at First Congregational Church, 55 Elm St., Camden, with the Rev. Kevin Pleas officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Carol S. Sebold Fine Art Scholarship Fund, care of Camden National Bank, P.O. Box 310, Camden, ME 04843. Carol had requested this fund to assist art students graduating from Camden Hills Regional High School. Arrangements are with Long Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 9 Mountain St., Camden.
