Alberta Slapak Obituary

Alberta E. Slapak, aged 93, a beloved resident of Wheaton, IL since 1952, peacefully passed away on Sunday, April 7, 2024. She was born on February 22, 1931, in Lincoln, Illinois, to Clarence and Alberta Duffey.

Alberta spent her childhood in Lincoln, primarily raised by her grandmother. She later moved to Chicago during her high school years, where she graduated from Austin High School. On July 29, 1949, she married Donald F. Slapak, a Marine veteran, and together they embarked on a journey that led them to Wheaton, where they purchased their first home.

Initially, Alberta worked as a bookkeeper for Continental Casualty Bank before dedicating herself to her family. During her children's formative years, she supplemented the family income by providing ironing services from home. Later, she resumed her career, serving as a dedicated bookkeeper for 17 years at Scott-Sloan, a department store in Wheaton, and subsequently for another 17 years at Gaede's Men's and Women's Apparel store. Her commitment to her work made her a recognizable figure in downtown Wheaton, where she was even featured as the poster-woman for Wheaton Community Bank.

Alberta was fondly remembered for her regular walks with her beloved dog, "Trinket," in downtown Wheaton. She actively participated in the choirs of both St. Paul Lutheran Church and Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Above all, she cherished her role as a devoted mother and loving wife to her husband, who worked at Sauer Electric in Wheaton. She served as the President of the Emerson School PTA and had a deep affection for the DuPage VFW post.

Alberta and Donald shared a passion for the outdoors, enjoying wilderness camping, boating on the Mississippi River, and traveling in their motorhome to various state and national parks.

She is survived by her sons, Gregory Slapak and Scott Slapak, both of Wheaton, her daughter Wendy Slapak-Halloran of Wisconsin, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Alberta was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald, shortly after celebrating their 65th anniversary.

A memorial visitation will be held on Sunday, April 28, 2024, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, followed by a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. Interment will be held privately at Wheaton Cemetery.

I miss her everyday. She was a dear friend and confidant. Before she was incapacitated, I would get together with her weekly- the Morton Arboretum, Cantigny, shopping/lunch in downtown Geneva. She would spend just about every holiday with me. Either in my home or her's. Often we would go out for dinner on the holidays. After Don passed, we got even closer. She was like a 2nd mother to me. We spoke everyday. She was there for me when I was diagnosed with cancer, taking me for my biopsy and doctor appointments. I lost a big part of me when she went to heaven. I still get weepy looking at old photos of her. She was a force in my life.

Berta was a special person in my life. A second mother to me. We spoke daily. From the day I met her family, I shared major holidays her, Don and Gregg. Berta and I loved to shop and have lunch. Go to Cantigny and the Morton Arboretum. She helped me when I got cancer, taking me to appointments and keeping my spirits up. I have been blessed to have her in my life for the time I did. I wish it could have been longer. Hard for me to imagine a world without her. A couple of days before Don passed, I was alone with him. I promised him that I would look after his beloved wife. Little did I know, it would be her looking after me. Berta had been talking to me a lot about Don lately- how she missed him. What a wonderful reunion that must have been.
