Amy Voigt Obituary

Amy L Voigt, age 62, of Sycamore, passed away peacefully at her home on September 24th, 2022, surrounded by her husband and her children. She was born in Elk Grove Village, IL on April 26th, 1960 to William and Mildred (Doherty) Hudgins.

From a young age Amy always had a spark about her that energized a room of people and showered them with love and laughter. Through her, so many of us learned the importance of love, family, compassion, drive, and strength. To love a person, a place, or a passion can bring so much meaning to life and Amy’s life was filled with love in more ways than could be counted. Her greatest loves were her husband, her kids, and her grandkids. Even in her final days, the grandkids could bring a smile to her face like nothing else could. She especially loved shopping for their Christmas gifts each year and watching them open her carefully curated purchases as their faces lit up with joy. She fiercely loved her family and often made sacrifices to bring more happiness to their lives. At one time she worked several jobs at once, sacrificing any time to herself, to provide more for her family. When it came to family, there was never a doubt in Amy’s mind if something was worth it. For her it was always worth it.

Amy was compassionate. She felt the world needed more compassion and spent most of her life trying to help those in need. She volunteered as a scout leader for both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. She managed multiple events a year for the Spina Bifida Association including a magnificent summer carnival complete with games that she would invent and an entire trailer full of prizes she got donated for the kids. Amy helped create the Pay-It-Forward House in Sycamore. This was a place family members could stay while their loved ones were being treated long-term at the Kindred Hospital facility, where she worked as an administrative assistant for nearly twenty years. Amy had wanted to be a midwife nurse throughout her youth because she cared so deeply about helping others, but when life took some unexpected turns, she changed direction and found other ways to work in healthcare that could bring her joy. She poured her heart and soul into everything that she did for others. She had the best heart, and her heart taught the rest of us what true unconditional love really meant. We all lived better lives because Amy’s light shined upon us all.

Amy had a drive and determination that was unmatched. She faced many obstacles in life but was always resourceful and resilient in overcoming those obstacles and finding new approaches to reach the end goals. She was fierce, fun, and strong. She was a powerful woman in this world who was always striving to make the next goal happen or to make the next party the best one yet.

She loved music and dancing, deep within her soul. From playing her guitar as a teen to writing poetry and songs, from dancing in Orchesis in high school to dancing in the kitchen with her kids and grandkids, Amy always moved to the beat of her own drum. At Christmastime she would have a rotation of music that played the whole season long as she sang, danced, sipped Bailey’s and decorated the house for the next time the whole family would be together. Family was always her truest joy and Christmas was her favorite time to bring everyone together.
She loved traveling and took many trips with her husband and her kids. Vegas was a top favorite! She and her husband would look forward to going at least once year. They would gamble, surely, as Amy loved playing the slot machines like she used to do with her Mom and sisters, but most of their time was spent enjoying the meals together, taking in the latest show performances, and wandering the casinos for hours just to look at every inch of the magnificent decorations. They were always sure to stop at the Bellagio fountains to watch the water dance beautifully to meaningful music as they stood in appreciation of each other’s company, the love they shared, and the lives they lived together.

While Amy loved nature, adventure, and helping the world at large, she also deeply appreciated the littlest moments in life. For she always knew that those were secretly the biggest moments. She helped two of her grandkids be born, she loved making people laugh, she loved a good warm hug with the important people in her life, she loved feeding peanuts to the squirrels while sitting in the breeze or taking long walks and she loved just sitting on the couch to get lost in a good book while she sipped her Chai. Amy never let the beauty in a single moment be lost on her. She lived each moment completely and deeply throughout her life.

Even though we are deeply sad about losing her, we try to remember all that she brought to our lives, all the love that she gave to each one of us, and all the lessons that we learned from her along the way. She was a friend to all, an amazing Mother to her children, a fun-loving Mimi to her grandkids, and an immeasurable love to her husband. While we are a little lost without her light, we will find a way to shine with the light she was sure to instill in each of us so we can keep her fighting spirit alive in this world. We love you, Amy, Mom, Mimi. Always and forever. Rest easy, Beautiful.

Amy is survived by her husband of nearly 25 years, Don Voigt; her children James (Kristin) Doerner, Christina (Andrew) Covert, and Nicholas (Laura) Doerner, her stepchildren Jeff (Brandi) Voigt and Jon Voigt; grandchildren: Cole, Riley, Violet, Lincoln, Kaitlynn, Molly, Tyler, Courtney, Brandon, Bradley, Bentley, and Brinley; siblings Linda (Gary) Grund, Mark (Linda) Hudgins, Tish (Dave) Jensen, Scott (Luann) Hudgins, and Glenn (Connie) Hudgins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Gail Hudgins.

Her visitation will be on Friday, Sept 30th from 4:00-8:00 pm at the Butala Funeral Home, 1405 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore, IL with a service beginning at 7:00 pm.
