Anatolig “Anthony” Afanasiew, 79, passed away Tues August 8, 2023. He was born in Vitebsk, Russia to the late Ivan and Alexandra Afanasiew. Anthony grew up in Springfield and attended Classical High School. Anthony then joined the US Army where he proudly served with the 720th MP Battalion during the Vietnam War. Upon returning home, he worked in construction for many years before going to work for the City of Springfield D.P.W. Anthony enjoyed reading about history, mostly about the military and enjoying music, especially R&B, Soul and all things Motown. He was also an avid sports fan and coached 5A football in Springfield. Anthony leaves his loving wife Gloria (Guilmette), his sons Anthony and Eric Afanasiew, his daughters Tammy and Tina Afanasiew, his nine grandchildren and several great grandchildren, along with his sisters Nadia Folger and Tania O’Neil and several nieces and nephews. He cherished is forever pup “Cookie”. Anthony was predeceased by his son Ivan Afanasiew. Family and Friends are invited to a Russian Orthodox Service to be held THURS at 11 AM in St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, 343 N. Maple St., Enfield, CT. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main St., Agawam. Calling Hours will be held WEDS from 4 to 7 PM at the Agawam Curran-Jones Funeral Home, 745 Cooper St., Agawam. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation in Anthony’s name to the American Leukemia Foundation, P.O. Box 2270, Roswell, GA 30077
