Arlen R. Day, Sr. 91, of Pottsville, died peacefully December 2, 2023, at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Schuylkill.
He was born December 8, 1931, in Pottsville a son of the late Edmond and Carrie Miller Day.
He was a 1950 graduate of Pottsville High School.
He was a Navy veteran having served during the Korean War. While in the Navy he was quarterback for the Naval Missleman Football Team.
Prior to retiring Arlen worked for General Battery Exide Production and the Republican Hearld.
Arlen was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Pottsville, and the Crimson Tide Club. He also was a Pottsville Midget Football Coach where he coached the Panthers; a Pottsville Area High School All Sports Hall of Fame inductee for his ability in Football on June 24, 2004; Allen-Rogowicz Sports Hall of Fame inductee on Oct 20, 2013.
Throughout his life Arlen was an avid hunter.
He was preceded in death by two great-grandsons, Shawn Day and Tristyn Bruen; 2 brothers, Ken and Frank Day; 2 sisters, Clara Fallwood and Reda Axe; a grandson-in-law Chuck Sorokach.
Surviving are his wife of 71 years of marriage, Patricia Dumbrowney; a daughter, Cheryl Swartz, Pottsville; Arlen “Rick” Day, II and his companion Tammy Bebelheimer, Pottsville; 9 grandchildren, Kim Quinn and her husband Bobby, Heath Bruen and his wife, June, Randy Bruen, Diana Sorokach, Melissa Day, Christopher Day, Sandy Day, Samantha Day, Samantha Jo Jones and her husband, Ben; 19 great-grandchildren, Dylan, RJ, Elliott, Kayonna, Whitten, Tori, Angel, Ashley, Kenny, Kara, Savanna, Kayla, Sakira, Malaki, Caitlyn, Brady, Austin, Maddy, Mason; 9 great-great grandchildren, Scarlett, Karson, Hadlie, Koda, Raelyn, Jacob, Everleigh, Heath, Belle; nieces, nephews, brother-in-law.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11AM Saturday, January 13, at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Pottsville. Family and friends are invited to a visitation from 9:30AM until the time of Mass. Interment with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery. The family would prefer remembrances in the form of contributions in memory of Arlen be made to St. Patrick Memorial Fund, 319 Mahantongo St., Pottsville, PA 17901. Arrangements are under the care of James E. Humphrey Funeral Home, Pottsville.
