Arthur "Art" McEnaney Obituary

Arthur Cyril McEnaney was called home to the Lord on Saturday, March 14th, 2026, after a brief illness. Art was born August 4th, 1936, to Cyril and Cecelia (Broxterman) McEnaney. Born number six out of ten children, Art grew up on farms in Northwest Missouri, calling Tarkio, Missouri, home.

He married Saundra Lee "Sandy" Lane on March 4th, 1957. The couple moved to St. Joseph and had six children - three sons and three daughters. Curtis, Keith (Paula), Kent (Tracy), Glenda, Joy (Jan Ambrozi), and Gina (Fritz Ambrozi). The family lost Sandy in 1978.

Art owned and operated McEnaney Construction Company and was a well-know homebuilder for 43 years. He took great pride in his work and enjoyed looking back to see what had been accomplished that day on the job. He often joked that he would wake up in the morning with a pile of sawdust next to the bed because he was cutting rafters all night in his dreams.

Art worked very hard in construction, but even more so on his farm just east of St. Joseph where he raised cattle. Although many would consider it a hobby farm, he took it very seriously and made great effort to improve his herd over the years. He loved his cows like many people love their dogs or cats. Each had a name, and they would come running whenever he went to the barn. When he was no longer able to take care of the cattle, he was glad that we was able to sell the entire herd to one person who would take care of them the way he did. He insisted that pictures of his cows be shown at his funeral.

Art met his life partner, Sheila Dougan, in 1996. The two took care of each other for 30 years.

Art was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sandy; his sister, Delores Miller; brothers, Richard, Gerald, Derald, and Delbert; and one great-grandson, Owen.

He is survived by his children: Curtis, Keith (Paula), Kent (Tracy), Glenda, Joy (Jan Ambrozi), and Gina (Fritz Ambrozi),; 22 grand children; 32 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and several siblings, nieces, and nephews.

Art had a wonderful sense of humor and a quick wit. He would often turn a phrase into his own, which his sons called "Arthurisms." One common phrase was, "Rome wasn't built in a day, but I wasn't on that job!" Arthur will be greatly missed by those who knew him best.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 18th, 2026 at Cathedral of St. Joseph from 7:00-8:30 PM.  Thursday, March 19th, 2026 the rosary will begin at 10:00 AM, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM, at Cathedral of St. Joseph. Interment to follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

In lieu of floral arrangements, memorials may be directed to either Cathedral of St. Joseph c/o Monsignor Noland Endowment Fund or the American Cancer Society.

I'm so glad I got to attend Uncle Art's 80th birthday party a few years ago. He and I had a conversation about my dad. We had some laughs together and we cried together while we talked. That was such a special moment that will always be in my heart. Uncle Art was one of the best.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. We met Art in '93 when he was building our house. It was the time of the flood. Art was a hard working person and he had a talent for building. Prayers and blessings to Art and the family. May he rest in peace.

We’re devastated that we won’t be able to be there for the funeral, but so grateful for all the time we were able to spend with Grandpa whenever we came into town. We will always remember Grandpa Art, especially through the beautiful and fitting grandfather clock he gifted us. It will forever remind us of his warmth, love, and the moments we shared.

I read Art’s obituary at work. For the next 30 minutes, I had to explain to coworkers why I was weeping. Art would have asked me, “Why the hell did you read it at work?” or respond with an Arthurism. Art became Uncle Art to me through marriage. I married Delbert’s daughter, Wendy. I counted it a treat when I got to see Uncle Art on one of our visits to Iowa. My favorite memory of Uncle Art is from Delbert’s funeral. I was taking a picture of the McEnaney cousins. Art couldn’t decide whether to get in the picture or out of it. He was moving back and forth like a duck at a carnival shooting gallery. As with all of the McEnaney men, I will dearly miss Uncle Art. If I could talk to Pa (Delbert). right now, I’m sure he would say, “You know, Jeff, we lost a good one right there. But, we all gotta die from something.” He would be right on both counts. Art, thank you for being one of the “good ones” in my life. McEnaney family, I wish I could be there with you to celebrate Uncle Art’s life and mourn our loss. I love you all! — Jeff Deist
