Arthur Lemuel McCune, Jr.
Arthur Lemuel McCune, Jr. was born on April 16, 1947, to Arthur Lemuel McCune Sr. of Des
Moines, Iowa and Thelma Richards McCune of Boston, Massachusetts. Arthur Jr. passed
away, at age 78, on January 1, 2026.
Arthur, affectionately known as Art, grew up in Des Moines, Iowa. He attended Bird
Elementary, Callanan Junior High School and North High School. He played defensive
tackle on the North High School Polar Bears football team until he dislocated his shoulder
during his senior year and graduated in 1965.
Upon graduation, Art attended Ellsworth Junior College in Ellsworth, South Dakota and
played defensive tackle on the college football team until he sustained a second severe
shoulder dislocation ending his college football career. He enlisted in the United States Air
Force in 1967 serving at Ellsworth Air Force base in Ellsworth, South Dakota as a medical
unit staff sergeant. While in the Air Force he was awarded Airman of the Month Award. He
was honorably discharged in 1971.
Arthur originally met Marsha Fant when they both were children at Willkie House Day Camp
in Des Moines, Iowa. They reconnected on a blind date in their twenties while she was in
college and he was in the Air Force and married two years later in 1976. They were blessed
with a son, David Carleton. Art and Marsha were married 49 years.
At age 46, Art returned to college attending Bowie State University and earned a Bachelor
of Science degree in Business Administration graduating cum laude. He was a member of
Delta Mu Delta and Alpha Chi Honor Societies. He subsequently earned a Master of
Science degree in Public Administration from Central Michigan University, in Mount
Pleasant, Michigan and completed course work towards his Doctorate degree at the H.
Wayne Huizenga School of Business at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale,
Florida.
Art began his government career in Des Moines, Iowa at the United States Department of
Agriculture [USDA]. He then transferred to the USDA in Washington, DC, transferring again
to USDA meat and poultry division in Alameda, California. Upon returning to Washington,
DC, Art worked with Homeland Security. He retired from the Transportation Security
Administration as a Management Analyst in 2004.
Art served on the board of the Camp Springs Boys and Girls Club as well as a T-ball coach.
He was a volunteer football coach in Des Moines, Iowa. Art was a former member of the
Iowa Club and a member of the North High School Polar Bear Alumni Club.
Art was deeply devoted to his family and served as family patriarch. He was incredibly
supportive of his family, and cherished holiday gatherings, family vacations, get-togethers,
and attending activities in support of his family. Art loved watching sports and movies, and
had an affinity for cars. He loved to cook, laugh, joke and had a great sense of humor. As
much as Art loved others, he was deeply loved and valued by his family and friends.
Art was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Sr. and Thelma, and his brother, Norman.
He leaves to cherish his memories his wife Marsha McCune, son David McCune, daughter-
in-law Quinette McCune, grandson Daniel McCune and granddaughter Zuri McCune; sister-
in-law Jody McCune; cousins Richard Bayne, Bijan Bayne, Cheryl Richards and Carla

Dear Marsha,
We were so very sorry to hear of Art’s passing. He had such a great sense of humor. I pray that the pain of his loss will be replaced by the wonderful memories that the two of you shared. May God grant you peace during this difficult time. Ginger (Miller) & Von Rawley

Our condolences to the family in this difficult time. My brother Virgil and I grew up with Arthur and we attended Bird and Callahan together. We have many fond memories of those times. He was caring and fun even at a young age. It’s clear that he carried those same things throughout his life.
I hope you find comfort knowing how many lives he touched and how fondly he is remembered. My prayers are with your family as you make your way through this loss.
