Attorney David Skerry Obituary

Attorney David P. Skerry – A lifelong resident of Medford, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 11, 2026. He was 83 years old.

Born, raised, and educated in Medford, he was the beloved son of the late Patrick and Dorothy (Bennett) Skerry. David was a proud graduate of Medford High School, Class of 1960, where he also served as captain of the football team. Following high school, he continued his education at Boston University College of Business Administration, where he graduated first in his class. He later attended Boston College, earning his law degree. Although he was proud of these accomplishments, David often said that his post-graduate year at Newman Prep was what truly helped shape the direction of his life and set him on the path to the success he enjoyed.

David went on to have a long and respected career as a self-employed attorney, practicing law for over 55 years. Through his work and community involvement, he became well known and respected throughout the City of Medford.

Deeply committed to public service and his community, David served two terms on the Medford School Committee in 1969 and 1971. He later served four terms on the Medford City Council in 1973, 1975, 1977, and 1979. He also gave back to the community in many other ways, including sponsoring teams in Medford Youth Baseball and generously supporting local athletics, particularly the Tufts University Men’s Basketball program, Medford High School basketball, and Medford Youth Basketball.

While he was devoted to his career and community, David often said his other full-time job was being a father to his three sons. It was a role he took very seriously and one he considered his most important. Known to many as the “basketball dad,” David rarely missed a game and could always be found in the stands proudly cheering on his boys.

All three of his sons went on to play college basketball for Tufts University, and David and his beloved wife Kathy proudly traveled throughout New England to watch their sons play and later coach for Tufts. Supporting his family and their accomplishments brought him immense pride and joy.

David was also an avid college football fan and never missed a game if it was on television. When football was on, he was fully focused on the game as he enthusiastically cheered on his favorite teams.

In his quieter moments, David enjoyed gardening, spending many peaceful hours tending to his yard and garden whenever the weather allowed.

David also shared a love of travel with his beloved late wife, Kathy. Together they created many wonderful memories cruising to destinations around the world.

Devoted husband of the late Kathleen (Granara) Skerry. Beloved father of Patrick Skerry and his wife Kristen of Lutherville, MD, John Skerry of Medford and Brian Skerry and his wife Linda of Boston. Cherished grandfather of Ryan and Owen Skerry. Loving brother of Judith Moniz and her late husband James of Medford, and Patricia Hickey and her husband Philip of NH. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

A funeral procession will be on Friday, March 20th from the George L. Doherty Funeral Home 855 Broadway (Powder House Sq.) Somerville at 9:00AM. Followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Francis of Assisi Church 441 Fellsway Medford at 10:00AM.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 4:00PM to 7:00PM.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers memorial contribution may be on behalf of the Granara-Skerry Trust made to Trust to http://www.pancure.net/ or to the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute https://giving.massgeneral.org/donate/mgb-cancer-institute

Dear Judy and family,
This is Betsy Pesce.
I was so truly sorry to read of your loss of your dear brother David.
Gratefully, I have not yet experienced this particular loss, but I can only imagine what you and your family are going through right now, and my heart goes out to all of you. Please know that you are in my thoughts, and you have my prayers that God will help you all through this difficult time.
My mother always said that God never gives us more than we can bear, although He may really “test our mettle" sometimes, as He is surely testing yours and your family's now.
I know you must have so many happy memories of all of your years with David that will help to sustain you now. Continue to talk about him... tell the stories, laugh, cry... and above all, keep him alive in your hearts always.
With our deepest sympathy,
Betsy and Phillip Pesce

The man was beyond remarkable. He was smart, witty, and above all, very thoughtful. I already miss him and I pray his boys can have some comfort knowing all along what a nice person he was...I love you David...God bless you.

While this is a footnote to Dave’s legacy, I never forgot our relationship as two politically active young men. We both came from political families in Medford that grounded us in looking out for the common good to benefit the many. In the early 60s, Dave and I revitalized the Medford Young Democrats with Dave at the helm as president and I as his vice president. He was a leader then who retained those principles forged in his youth that carried him through his life and career. He is a Skerry, a name that my parents, and especially my father, held in high regard in friendship and politics. While it has been years since we shared a pivotal period in our young lives, I’ve always acknowledged my relationship with Dave to those who remain close to the Skerry family, to whom I send my deepest condolences. Memories of those who’ve influenced us never fade!
