Barbara Carvey Obituary

Barbara Anderson Carvey, 80, of Bedford, MA, passed away on July 16, 2025, just six days after the death of her beloved husband, Philip. She died peacefully, surrounded by her four children.

Born in Rhode Island to Emily and Randolph Anderson, Barbara grew up with a passion for both medicine and creativity. She was a natural with sewing and knitting needles from a young age; and she taught herself to sew, starting with simple doll clothes, and quickly moving on to more elaborate designs.  When she married Philip in 1968 she walked down the aisle in a gown of her own making!  Her love of learning and early interest in medicine led her to earn a degree in Medical Technology from Colby Junior College; and she went on to work for many years as a medical technologist at hospitals throughout the Boston area.

After starting their family, Barbara dedicated her brilliance and energy to raising her four children—a role she approached with wisdom and infinite patience. An expert wordsmith, she was always ready to help with essays, spelling tests, and college applications, offering encouragement and the occasional gentle push.

Barbara’s hands were never idle—she sewed costumes for school musicals, plays, and Halloween (often crafting capes and ensembles at the very last minute), and always had at least one knitting project in motion. Over the years, she created countless blankets, sweaters, scarves, and hats for her loved ones. Her generosity extended far beyond her family.  She knitted over 100 prayer shawls for her church community, and donated countless handmade hats to people in need. When someone was struggling or needed support, Barbara showed up—with food, a ride, or simply her presence. She always made room for one more—one more friend on a family outing, one more chair at the table during the holidays, one more person to feel seen and included.

A proud member of Mensa, Barbara had a keen intellect and memory. She could recall the details of a family trip decades ago—what someone wore, what song was playing, what was said—as if it had just happened.

Music was an integral part of Barbara’s life. She had a beautiful alto voice and sang in church choirs and the Concord Chorus for many years.  She played the piano and recorder and had an expansive collection of classical music that filled the house.  Barbara inspired all of her children and grandchildren to be singers and to learn an instrument–from violin, to drums, to piano, to guitar.

Barbara absolutely adored her seven grandchildren. She played an active and joyful role in raising them—caring for them when they were small, and helping teach them to read, cook, sew, knit, and crochet as they grew. Her home was filled with crafting supplies—sticker books, sparkle paper, yarn, fancy scissors, “bits and bobs”, and the tools to make almost anything. She encouraged creativity, experimentation, and expression, always ready to share a story, to impart sage advice, or just to lend ear when it was needed. Listening was one of her superpowers—and loving without reservation was another.

In her final years, Barbara devoted herself to caring for Philip, helping ensure he could remain close to family, especially their grandchildren.  It was no small task, but she gave herself to it completely, just as she did in all things.

Barbara is survived by her loving children Sarah (Dan), Christina (Nicholas), Andrew, and Matthew; her cherished grandchildren Madeline, Zachary, Eliza, Charlotte, Mia, Elson, and Cerenna; her siblings Robert Anderson (Gillian), Susan Anderson, and Charles Anderson (Kimberley); her sister-in-law Deborah Anderson, and her brother-in-law Paul Carvey (Kathy). She was predeceased by her infant son William, her brother Richard Anderson, her sister-in-law Jane Carvey, and her husband Philip Carvey.

She is now reunited with Philip, her partner of 56 years, whom she met in a ballroom dance class—a meeting that blossomed into a lifetime of laughter, music, and unconditional love.

Barbara gave selflessly and generously everything she had to the people she knew and loved. As she often said, “The thing about love is that there’s plenty to go around.”  And she lived that truth every day.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 81 Elm St., Concord, MA 01742, on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 11 AM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Concord Chorus, Box 171, Concord, MA, 01742.

Barb’s kindness to my family over the years was so deep and multifaceted that it has taken a while to sort through. We first connected during a Vestry retreat conversation about parenting; Barb soon afterwards brought over an enormous bag of “hand-me-downs” that, like her thoughtful counsel, I continue to .
appreciate.
Barb served generously as a fellow alto in the Trinity Church choir, donating hand warmers and hand-sewn hymnal covers. She sang beautifully. She invited my husband and me to join the Concord Chorus, where she also served generously—as kitchen crew for fundraising soirées and coordinating sustenance for performances.
With Phil, and son Matthew, Barb provided hospitality and support for my son, Miles, during college, and steady comfort after
his passing.
My warmest sympathy to Barb’s family.

Sitting behind Barbara during service in Trinity’s chapel, we talked before it started. I learned enough to tell me that she loved singing, as much as I do. That night, she gave me two tickets to the Concord Chorus concert in December. We went to the concert. I auditioned, and joined the chorus in January. She and I sang together as altos in that chorus for ten years. Phil was there as a bass too. Many more memories of Barbara after that, but that first one is seared in my memory. She inspired me to fulfill a lifelong dream.
