Barnabas Zsigmond Obituary

We are deeply saddened by the loss of "BJ" Barnabas John Zsigmond, born May 24, 1927 in Budapest, Hungary to Mohos Jolán and Zsigmond István.  After having to escape the 1956 Revolution in Hungary, he was a grateful American Hungarian who found refuge, freedom and the opportunity to realize his dreams and live life as he imagined it.

Moving from Ohio to San Francisco and finally to South and North Carolina he found value in multiple endeavors Civil Engineering (Bechtel Corp.1963-1977), renovating houses, properties, egg farm, livestock, tropical fish & birds, blackberries, farm equipment, Zsolnay porcelain, Persian carpets, antiques  and he still had plans for more. Most of all he valued his wife of 55 years, Sikorski-Zsolnay Zsuzsanna who passed away in Dec. 2007.  They were married July 1953 and welcomed their only child Sophia in 1959. In1967, he sponsored his mother. These three were his core team. He greatly appreciated everyone who helped him reach his goals and especially, in the last ten years his cherished friend Dorothy Brutko gave him much love, help & cheerful company while he still was restless with his ambitions. Her support made it possible for him to continue. His network grew with trusted tradesmen and most importantly the meticulous skills of Vicki Samaha. BJ took pride in you wonderful people who provided him with such thorough "assisted living"

His daughter, Sophia who established her family with Dr. Laszlo Szoke in Canada was always with him in spirit and tried to keep up with his projects. We were always in awe of his drive. We mourn and will always miss him with grandchildren Sándor, Zsuzsanna, Tamás and Teréz (fiancé Will) his cousins Kafka Márta and Kafka György, his sister-in-law Sikorski-Zsolnay Antónia and family and friends.
In his childhood BJ was greatly inspired by his uncle John Mohos whose unconditional love strengthened  him throughout his life. This connected him with the faith and hope of eternal life and BJ was a dedicated Catholic who honored God in all his projects.

We are assured that the Lord  in all his Mercy welcomed BJ beside his beloved Mopi.

Memorial Mass will be held  11:00 am Monday, October 15, 2018 at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church with Rev. Father Michael Kottar, celebrant.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to:  Te Deum Foundation 2767 London Lane Winston-Salem NC 27103.

I have worked with BJ over the last 3 years in the development of a solar project on his property. BJ was always very professional and courteous in our interactions. It is very sad to hear of his passing. Rest in peace.

*Change of address: Heaven. "Jennifer, this is BJ Zsigmond". I have helped Mr. Zsigmond through insuring his home and properties for the last 8 years. I cannot convey the pleasure it was for him to call my name and speak with me either in person or on the phone. He was such a special person and I feel blessed to call him friend as well. He shared a lot about the "love of his life". Heaven gained a beautiful soul. I feel honored to have met him and he will be missed. Prayers for this family during this time.

I met Mr. Zsigmond through the Real Estate world and always enjoyed him coming into our office. He had wonderful stories to share and was so very pleasant! He spoke at length about his childhood Vizsla and I would tell him all about mine - we agreed they are the best dogs ever! I am saddened by his loss and will keep his family in my prayers. I am so glad I had the opportunity to meet this remarkable man!

BJ was quite a unique person and always the complete gentleman. We had some nice conversations and many of them revolved around food. With his guidance I attempted to make Hungarian dishes that he would approve of. Hot Hungarian paprika has a special place in my heart because of him. He was loved so much as a friend and neighbor.
