Ben, Curtis, Tracey, and Kathy,

I just heard about your father. I am praying for you. I will let your family and friends here in Houston know about Mr. Ben's passing.

You will live in my heart everyday,you were truely a kind ,honest,strong and giving man.You were like a father to Pookie ,she also loved you dearly.I know you are at peace and watching over all those you held close to your heart.

Uncle Ben was a great, loving man and he will be greatly missed.

I only had the pleasure of meeting Ben a few brief times, but he made a lasting impression. He was truly a kind, caring, wonderfully happy man who spread smiles no matter what the situation. If there were more people like Ben, this world would be a much better place! God bless Ben and his family. He will be missed.

Ben A. Spears 76, of N. Johnson St. South Bend passed away January 5, 2011.  Ben A. Spears was born June 15, 1934 to the union of Edward Spears and Annie Mae Nelson.

Ben retired from being an iron worker with Local 292, a job that brought him much joy.  Ben had a love for fishing, which was one of his favorite pastimes.  Ben was a delightful man who brought joy and laughter to whomever he was around.

Ben was preceded in death by his mother, Annie Mae Nelson; father, Edward Spears; two brothers, George Edward Spears and William Whitmore; two sisters, Lorraine Smith and Annie Mae Whitmore.

To cherish his memory, he leaves behind a loving sister, Shirley Thomas of South Bend; nine children: Ben Spears, Jr. of South Bend, Curtis (Lubertha) Spears of Peoria, IL., Kathy Spears Tribett of South Bend, and Tracey (Robert) Taylor also of South Bend, (to whom was conceived in his union to Catherine Thompson who also preceded him in death); Arby Allen Mitchell of Texas, and Terry Reese of Niles, MI (with the union of Ben and Barbara Reese); Erica Gilliam of South Bend, April Cleveland of South Bend, and Jackie Spears of Texas (with the union Ben and Jimmie Spears).

Ben also leaves behind a host of grandchildren, and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  Ben will be dearly missed and it gives the family great joy to know that heaven has received such a remarkable soul.

Funeral services for Mr. Spears will be Friday, Jan. 14, 2011 in the Clark-O'Neal Funeral Home, 2702 Lincoln Way West, South Bend, IN.  Visitation 11:00 a.m. and funeral services 12:00 noon.  Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery.
