It is with great sadness that the Haythorn family announces the passing of their beloved son Benjamin Andrew “Drew” Haythorn. Drew passed away in a tragic accident in Tucson, Arizona on Saturday, August 27, 2022. Drew was born on March 6, 1996, in Atlanta, Georgia. He was 26 years old.
Drew was a member of Asbury Church in Madison and an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia and enjoyed time spent with his “brothers in blue”.
Drew had an adventurous and caring spirit. He never met a stranger and had the unique ability to remember names and faces of people he met along his journey. He was a lover of animals and had an especially fond place in his heart for Lacey and Prissy, the family puppies.
He loved nature and enjoyed camping, hiking, bicycling, and being outdoors. He completed numerous adventures to include: two trips to Philmont Scout Ranch, biking the C&O Canal and Silver Comet trails, as well as riding in several Spring City Cycle Club’s 50-mile annual fundraisers. Drew and his dad backpacked several sections of the Appalachian Trail. He relished music from all genres and made playlists to enjoy from countless artists.
Drew leaves behind his parents, Thom and Shirlana Haythorn, and sister Mary Zappe and husband Richard. He is survived by his grandmothers, Barbara Haythorn and Shirley Folmar, as well as many more extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved grandfather Ray Folmar.
He was taken from us too soon and will be forever missed. If you were fortunate to really know Drew, you will, as we already do, miss him immeasurably.
A Celebration of Drew’s life will be held at Legacy Chapel Funeral Home in Madison, Alabama on Friday, October 21, 2022. Visitation will begin at 10:00a with his Life Celebration following at 11:00a.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a local pet shelter or Humane Society.

Shirlana, My heart breaks from learning about Drew's passing.
He always came into my classroom to visit with me on our teacher workdays. He was full of life and curiosity and smiles. You and Thom were wonderful parents, and you gave him a wonderful life. Your family will be in my prayers.

Lori and I can't begin to express our deep sadness over this unspeakable loss. It is our hope that the pain you must all be experiencing is replaced by loving memories of every moment of his years with you, and with the knowledge that you will be reunited in the light of love, someday.

Drew’s Scoutmaster’s Minute:
Unfortunately, I have some serious and solemn news for tonight’s Scoutmaster’s Minute.
Drew Haythorn, an Eagle Scout from Troop 350 has died from a car accident. His services will be held this Friday at the Legacy Funeral home here on Hughes Road.
Drew went to Philmont with the Troop (and me) way back in 2012.
Drew was 26, meaning it’s been 8 years since he “aged out” of the troop, so it’s doubtful if any of our current scouts remember him. But I’m sure some of our leaders will remember his smile, his spirit, and his sometimes-dry wit on many an adventure.
Our former Committee Chair, Mr. Mike Newchurch, had the following kind words to share about Drew.
"Mr. Drew Haythorn became Troop 350 Eagle Scout #93 on December 22, 2013. I chaired his Eagle Board of Review. He was a capable and honorable Eagle Scout.
It is because of boys growing into men like Drew Haythorn that our communities and nation have any hope, at all of prevailing. We must continue to develop boys into men like Drew Haythorn.
Drew’s passing causes us to reflect on how fragile life is.
Be prepared.
Live each day like it might be your last.
May God rest your soul, Drew."
I’ll be sending a link out about Drew’s Celebration of Life, that will be held this Friday. I ask that each of you keep the Haythorn family in your prayers.
