Bernadine “Berna” Cleaver passed away on March 11, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and the kind of warmth that makes a house a home.
Born on December 7, 1949, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Berna carried the spirit of that city with her when she migrated to San Francisco, California — and she never let it dim. She was welcomed into this world by her mother, Odile Byes, and her father, Author Henderson, both of whom preceded her in death. She built her life in the heart of the Fillmore district, where she raised her two sons, Christopher Cleaver and Antone House, with fierce devotion and an unwavering commitment to making them good men. She was also a proud and loving grandmother, a role she cherished deeply.
Berna gave her working years in service to others. She served as an environmental healthcare worker at Laguna Honda before going on to a distinguished career with the United States Postal Service, from which she proudly retired.
At home, she was curator, host, and heartbeat. Her love of collecting vintage items meant every corner of her house told a story. Her table was always full — dominoes in play, plates loaded, and laughter filling the room. Hosting family and friends wasn’t just something she did; it was her calling. Watching the people she loved eat, celebrate, and enjoy one another was, to her, pure joy.
Bernadine is survived by her sons Christopher and Antone, her grandchildren, her sisters and brothers, and a host of family and friends whose lives are richer for having known her.
She is gone, but the table she set — in every sense — remains.
Memorial service will be held on Monday, March 30, 2026, at 11:00 am at the Pittsburg Funeral Chapel

Berna,
What a loving memory it is to have had you in my life. You opened your home to me when I was young and lost in my ways — when I left home thinking I was grown and had no place to go. You never turned me away.
You gave me what I didn’t even know I needed: confidence, stability, grace, and guidance. You nurtured me along the way without ever making me feel small.
Chris went on to become the Godfather of my three children, and true to who you raised him to be, he gave them the same love you gave me.
You will truly be missed — and you will always, always be in my heart.
With love and gratitude,
Aaron
