Bernard Heizman Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we share the sudden passing of Bernard “Bernie” Heizman, 74, of Portland, CT on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. Bernie was the beloved husband of Patricia “Pat” (Ortisi) Heizman and son of the late Bernard and Josephine Heizman.

Bernie is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Pat; his cherished children, Laura and Peter Zinnen of West Suffield, and David and Loren Heizman of Ardsley, New York; and his six treasured grandchildren, Michael, Leah, and Will Heizman, and Grayson, Nadia, and Sophia Zinnen. In addition, he is survived by his siblings, Thomas Heizman, Janet Heizman, Donald (Patricia) Heizman, and Robert (Deborah) Heizman, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Bernie was predeceased by his parents, sister Joanne, sister-in-law Janet and his in-laws Angelo and Wanda Ortisi.

Born on September 19, 1951, in Queens, New York, he moved with his family to Middletown when he was seven years old. He attended local schools and met Pat at Middletown High, where they became high school sweethearts and shared a loving bond that lasted for the next 58 years. They celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary last August.

Bernie graduated from CCSU with a BS degree in marketing.  Professionally, Bernie spent several years in management at McDonald’s before joining The Middletown Press, where he worked for many years. His time there was defined not only by his dedication to the job but by the many friendships he built and the deep connections he formed within the community.

Together they raised two adored children, Laura and David. Bernie loved sports and enjoyed sharing that passion with others. He coached both his children in soccer, basketball, baseball, and softball, and over the years, he also coached and mentored many children in the Portland community. A diehard Yankees, NY Giants and UConn fan, he loved attending and watching all of his grandchildren’s sporting events and musical performances. They were his most cherished blessings and brought him his greatest joy. His grandchildren loved their grandfather “Papa” beyond measure.

The Funeral Liturgy will be held on Wednesday, April 1st at 10:30 am at St. Mary Church, 31 Freestone Ave., Portland, CT 06480.  Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery. Those who wish may send memorial contributions to the American Heart Association, PO Box 840692 Dallas, Texas 75284-0692 or a charity of your choice. Bernie was my assistant manager when I worked at McDonald's 52 years ago. He was good to me and I always remembered that. Godspeed in your new destiny where you will be forever young.
