Bernie Gregory Obituary

Bernie Gregory, 80, of Jacksonville, died Thursday, July 30, 2015, at Passavant Area Hospital.

He was born September 24, 1934, in Brooklyn, IL, the son of Lloyd and Margaret Parrott Gregory. He married Janice Ridings on June 8, 1958, in Rushville, and she survives.

He is also survived by one son and two daughters, Jon (Maria) Gregory of Winchester, Lynne (J.T.) Marucco of St. Charles, and Beth (Lee) Rowden of New Berlin; seven grandchildren, Nick Gregory, Danny Gregory, Maddie Marucco, Corbin Marucco, Morgan Rowden, Cady Rowden, and April Abbott; and one brother, Bill (Leigh) Gregory of Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his sister, Janie Wenger.

Mr. Gregory received a Master's Degree in Chemistry from Western Illinois University and later received his Master's in Administration, also from WIU. He began work as a research chemist in Chicago. He then moved to Jacksonville to work for School District #117 as a chemistry teacher, guidance counselor, Assistant Principal and Principal at Jacksonville High School. He was especially proud to have been a football coach for the Crimsons. He then began work at Passavant Area Hospital as a Vice President and Human Resources Director, retiring after 23 years. He was also a veteran of the United States Army Reserves, serving during the Vietnam War.

Mr. Gregory enjoyed watching Bears games. His faith in God and love for his family were the most important things in his life. Bernie especially loved taking his family water skiing, and had many wonderful memories from their trips to Lake Norfolk in Arkansas.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 3, 2015, at Grace United Methodist Church in Jacksonville, with burial at Liberty Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. I want to thank your family for sharing your dad with the JHS family. He helped me so much after the death of my mother while he was in the guidance office. And as then Asst. Principal for managing to keep the graduation for the Class of '70 as good as it was considering the loss of Mr . Patterson was a couple of days prior to our graduation. Bernie Gregory was such a spectacular individual. I am sure those students' who had him in whatever position he held at JHS have heavy hearts.

Mr. Gregory walked the halls of JHS with a presence that commanded respect, but not fear. He was a leader; who led with a servant's heart. Looking back through the lens of an adult, it is clear that his heart was in his life's work.... and those of us who had the privilege of experiencing the gift of his life's calling are better for it. I'm thankful that he has met his goal, and am certain he has heard His Savior say "Welcome home".

I am very sorry to hear of Coach Gregory's passing. He was our soph football coach with Coach Dean Farmer. That team went undefeated when they became seniors in fall of 1964 (class of 1965). Mr Grrgory was also our class faculty sponsor. I can still see that great smile and his encouragement. I am sure I can speak for our whole class in saying we are better people because we had Mr Gregory in our lives. RIP Coach.
