Betty Gaye Nelson

1936 - 2026

Betty Gaye Nelson, 89, of Patrick Springs, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 9, 2026, at her home. She was born on June 1, 1936, in Grayson County, Virginia, to the late Hurshel Hix Halsey and Dany Anderson Halsey.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Bobby  Nelson; her infant son, Roger Allen Nelson; her brother, Hix Halsey, Jr.; her infant granddaughter, Beverly Dawn Nelson; and her beloved fur baby, Buckie.  

Betty was a devoted and active member of Pleasant View Baptist Church, where she was well known for her spirit of hospitality and faithful service. She retired after 40 years at Bassett Walker and later dedicated more than 10 years working in daycare, where her love for children shined brightly. She was affectionately known as “Nanny” to many children whose lives she touched.

Betty was a proud mother of a fire fighter. She enjoyed collecting angels and dolls along with turquoise jewelry, cherished her fur babies, and took great pride in canning and gardening, embodying the heart of a true Southern homemaker. She loved traveling, especially to the Cherokee area, and found joy in simple pleasures like popcorn, shrimp, and Pollo Loco from El Parrell. 

Betty leaves to cherish her memory her son, Vernon Nelson; her brother, Johnny Vester Halsey; her sister-in-law, Louise Halsey; her special family members, Tammy Strain, Becky Clodfelter, and Regina Lawson; as well as a host of extended family members and friends.

The family extends special thanks to Commonwealth Hospice, especially Nurse Meredith and Danielle, for their compassionate care and support.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at 11:00am at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.  Interment will follow at Old Center Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
