Career-wise, it would be safe to say that Carl is unique, working as an accountant at E Systems (now Raytheon) in Falls Church, Virginia, from straight-out-of-college until retirement. Carl also loves baseball, and played for the Richmond University Spiders while achieving his Bachelor’s degree in Accounting there. Carl was drafted by Uncle Sam into the U.S. Army after his first two years of college. He served his country for two years and returned to the University of Richmond after an honorable discharge to complete his degree. During this time Carl befriended the young new pastor of Bethel Church in his hometown, and suddenly discovered the pastor had a beautiful younger sister named Carol. A few dates and at least one apple pie later, Carl travelled to James Madison College on May 9th, 1958, while Carol was studying for her finals, and proposed. Carl & Carol were married August 9th, 1958. He played Men’s baseball in Loudoun County for many years, and even church softball. In addition, Carl took over tending his parents’ large garden in Stumptown, growing vegetables for family and friends. After his children left the nest, he began driving to Omaha, NE, every June to attend the NCAA College World Series (baseball) up through 2016. His four children surprised him in Omaha in 2014, for the best Father’s Day week ever. Carl devoted his life to family and friends, always kind and compassionate in caring for others. (see slide show photos below)
He is survived by his loving wife, Carol, and their 4 children: Susan Dudek, Evelyn Boor, Leslie Lindsey & Wes Carnes. Carl, or “Grandaddy,” shared a special relationship with each of his 13 grandchildren: Jessica, Amanda, Amelia, Josh, Ethan, Eslynn, Eli, Corey, Brant, Abigail, Sara, Reese and Freyja. (And a few “grand dogs as well!)
No flowers please! If you would like to honor Carl’s life, the family requests that any donations be made in Carl’s name to Bethel United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 152, Lovettsville, VA, 20180. Funds will be designated to helping those in need, something Carl excelled at his entire life.

Carl would always attend Lefler UMC when he came to the CWS in Omaha. We so looked forward to seeing him and have missed him these past few years. We could never get him to stay for brunch, though; he had to get to the ballpark!

I am sorry I just received the news. Please allow me to take a minute to Remember Carl!I worked with Carl in the 80’s at Melpar/ESystems now Raytheon in the Accounting group! I have never met anyone kinder, more patient and generous than Carl! Even back then when businesses knew little about employee work life balance, Carl knew everything about it! He has left a tremendous legacy in his children and his dear wife Carol! He generously shared all of the wonderful accomplishments in your childhoods and graciously taught me there is nothing more important than family! Yes he did teach me a bit about baseball! Thank you so much for sharing such a wonderful person. I am truly blessed to have known him!

Carol, on behalf of the Furr family we want to extend our condolences. Our dad Wally always considered Carl one of his closest friends. Maybe Carl and Dad can go do some fishing on the other side now. Carl was a great man and the world got a little darker with Carl’s passing.
You are in our thoughts.

What a nice man. I was introduced to him by my father Garland D. Keys (alias Smokey Ridgeway) when I was a young boy. Carl was never to busy talk baseball. He was always a welcome site at local ballparks. What a nice garden he had which reflected the kind of person he was. I'm so sorry for your loss but will remember him and am so glad to have met him. I believe that he's not sitting on the bench but answering the call when the Lord says play ball!

A perfect gentleman and a great baseball player. I played a lot of games with Carl and not once did I hear Carl say anything bad about anyone. Maybe one day he and I will play baseball again.

Carl was a true gentleman and a great pitcher for the Lucketts baseball team. He was a great role model for many of us who knew him. I played for Purcellville baseball team and batted against Carl many times over the years. Everyone could tell that he was a christian man by his actions. What wonderful memories all of us will always have of Carl. He touched so many people in such a positive way. May the Good Lord give comfort and blessings to his family at this difficult time.

My dad Norman Rollison managed the Lucketts baseball team to 2 championships in the 1950s . He spoke so highly of Carls pitching ability and shared what a great Christian man he was too. As a child he was one of my baseball heroes in the old Loudoun County League. I was in awe of his demeanor and how he carried himself. Doubt he ever knew me but he made quite an impression on a10 year old boy. Prayers to all his family and friends. I lost a childhood hero!

From visiting shut ins, to stirring apple butter, to running the bases, to strike outs across home plate to being a devoted son to his parents, a loving husband to Carol and a rock to Susan, Evelyn, Leslie and Wes, to displaying how to be a "gentleman" to all his grandkids, to eating hot dogs, to fertilizing tomatoes, to digging potatoes, to balancing and re-balancing the treasury at Bethel for over 60 (yes 60!) years!
Carl's quiet, kind, easy-going demeanor is already so deeply missed.
He was a great role model in many ways. Slow to anger, caring, kind and always ready with a comforting smile. He was Christ's servant. But the one word that continues to harbor within me is: Steadfastness. He stood steadfast for so many things and for so many people... I am personally thankful for his 87 years of steadfastness to Bethel Church and the Stumptown Community. Go in Peace Brother Carl - I hope you and Teddy Bear are on the baseball field and in your gardens! Thank you for the precious memories and good times that I will forever keep in my heart....
