Charles Rasweiler Obituary

Charles William Rasweiler was born on October 2, 1924 in Queens, NY. He was the son of Charles A. Rasweiler, a New York fireman and his wife, Emma Schmidt.

Charles was a kind and gentle soul who gave devoted service to his country and his community.

He is survived by his wife, Fran Gilmer Rasweiler, three daughters; Doris Rasweiler, Diane and her husband Johannes Richter, and daughter Beth Ann Rasweiler Griffin. His son, Roger Mark was killed in the World Trade Center North Tower on September 11, 2001. There are twelve loving grandchildren; Caryn, Lindsey, Michael, John Augustina, Justin, Rebeca, Luca, Andrew (his twin Mathew is deceased), Jason and David. He also leaves his special great-grandchildren; Brenden, Ashton, Grayson, Creighton and Keiko.

Charles graduated from Brooklyn Tech and Hofstra University with honors. He further received two Masters Degrees from Hofstra University in Education and Business. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II and went through both pilot and navigator training. By the time he completed his training in the Army, the war was over and he was honorably discharged. His career as an engineer for Airborne Instruments Lab lead to him becoming the manager of the Surface Radar Project at ten major U. S. airports. He would later tell his children that the large round white things on top of control towers were his golf balls. He was a past president of his local school board. He would later make a career change to be a physics teacher and coach the girl's tennis team due to his school board involvement. He was very active in two plant societies; as past president of the New York Chapter of the Rhododendron Society and an active member of the Valley Forge Chapter of the Rhododendron Society.

Along with his wife, he retired to Cedar Crest in Pompton Plains, NJ, where he enjoyed playing bridge games. He died on July 2, 2014. A Memorial Service is planned for 11 AM Saturday, August 16, 2014 at the Interfaith Chapel of Cedar Crest.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice of New Jersey, 400 Broadacres Drive, Bloomfield, NJ 07003 would be greatly appreciated by his family.

"Mr. Raz," as we called him, was one of the kindest, most gentle people that I was ever lucky enough to know. As my physics teacher at Uniondale High, class of'81, he was ever so patient and soft spoken, always willing to help his students grasp the subject. I lived on a street on the other side of the football field and would walk home during study hall to make my favorite teacher, Mr. Raz, homemade chocolate chip cookies. He enjoyed them with his tea in the afternoons as he helped any student who needed it. I guess I thought of Mr. Raz as the Grandpa I wished I had because of his gentle disposition, which probably explains why so often over the years I've fondly thought of him. I'm sure Mr. Raz has been thought of with fondness by most if not all of his students. My heart goes out to you, Mr. Raz's family. Take comfort in knowing how much he was appreciated and how many years ago that he made that impression thats still remembered.

I was saddened to hear this news. I had the pleasure of being in Mr. Rasweiler's first science class at Uniondale High School in 1971-72. He was one of my favorite teachers. He was a kind and gentle man, who saw and encouraged the good in every student. Although I was not a good science student, I got an A in his class. May you be comforted by all the wonderful memories of his life.

I came across this notice reading Newsday. I want to express my sincere condolences to you (Diane) and Doris on the passing of your father. My belated condolences to both of you on the loss of your brother at the WTC.
