Charles David Rice passed away on April 22, 2023, in Herriman, Utah. Chuck was born in San Mateo, California to Charles Elton Rice and Helen Margaret Black on November 21, 1944. He and his older sister Barbara were raised in the beautiful redwood forest. Chuck spent his childhood in the great outdoors and he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and exploring the woods. The blue jay population near his home suffered after he was handed a gun at age 7. He became an excellent marksman and competed in rifle shooting competitions as a teenager. Due to his sister’s declining health, his parents were forced to move, and Chuck chose to live at the local YMCA camp during his junior and senior years of high school. While attending Pescadero Union High School, he enjoyed playing basketball, baseball and running track. He was the student body president and valedictorian his senior year. In 1962, Chuck attended Brigham Young University, where he later graduated with a degree in Business Management with minors in Accounting and Mathematics, and a composite minor in Economics and Statistics. In 1966, while attending BYU, Chuck was baptized in the Richards PE Building swimming pool and became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. During his senior year at BYU, he met a cute girl named Jolene Lake. In the 23 days before graduation, they enjoyed many ice cream and hot fudge sundae dates and he told Jolene that he could fall in love with her so easily. In 1967, Chuck received his draft notice and he valiantly served our country and arrived in Vietnam in October of 1968. In the army, he served with the 93rd Engineering Battalion and had a variety of jobs ranging from being a cook to a civilian personnel sergeant. Following Vietnam, he married the love of his life, Jolene Marie Lake, on June 10, 1970, in the Salt Lake temple.
Chuck and Jolene were the parents to three children, Cynthia Ann, Kerrilee Marie, and Kevin David, who they raised in Sandy, Utah. Time spent together as a family was always a priority. Amazing memories were made water skiing at Lake Powell, vacationing in the redwoods of California, and snow skiing in the winter. They supported their children at all their musical and sporting events. As grandchildren came into his life, his support for them never wavered. He could always be seen cheering them on at their activities. His grandkids will cherish memories of boating at Lake Powell and four wheeling at the cabin. Chuck enjoyed being in the outdoors, he was an excellent fisherman and especially enjoyed fly fishing. Chuck was a computer systems analyst for the State of Utah and retired after 36 years of employment. Soon after retirement, he took on a new role as caregiver after his wife became a paraplegic. His care and devotion to his wife during this difficult time was an inspiration.
Chuck was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He held a variety of callings in the church, ranging from Scoutmaster to being the First Counselor in the Bishopric. He especially enjoyed serving as a Family History Consultant and truly had a love for his ancestors and doing genealogical research.
Chuck is survived by his children Cindy (John) Powell, Kerri (Matt) Walker, and Kevin (Amber) Rice and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by the catch of his life, his beloved wife Jolene, his parents Elton and Helen and his sister Barbara.

I just found out through Classmates that Charles has passed. On behalf on the Pescadero Alumni I would like to express our condolences....It was so nice to meet Charles for the first time at the Pescadero reunion...I had heard so much about him and his beautiful sister Barbara who left this world too early. I greeted Chuck when he first walked in.... He was smiling as he was looked to see if he recognized anyone, so I walked over.......he was warm, friendly, eager & excited to see his old friends....as soon as he said who he was I took him over to my husband, they went to school and hunted together when they were kids....I was truly sorry to learn of his passing...I know he will be missed...but I am very glad that I had the opportunity to meet him...and truly hope the reunion was all he hoped it would be....remembering you with fondness Chuck...your classmate/classmates.

For several years, Chuck served as a counselor in the Bishopric of our Church and I had the privilege of learning from him by the way he lived. He was always so kind, supportive and steady in his commitments to serve others. He had a fun sense of humor, loved his family and all of the youth he served. He was always by the Bishop’s side quietly and consistently doing whatever was needed. I learned so much from his patience and genuine concern for others. You could see the love he had for his wife and children. I so enjoyed learning from him. I’ve loved learning more about him from his beautiful daughter and her wonderful family. He is leaving an amazing legacy that will be carried on for generations. Sending love and prayers to his family from ours.

I kept driving by this one empty lot on a semi-circle in Herriman and wondering who owned this lot and when are they going to build a house on it. Well it finally happened there was a house upon the lot and the greatest couple moved in (Jolene and Chuck Rice) We loved them both. When Jolene passed away Chuck was heart broken and always looked forward to joining his beloved and eternal companion. Chuck and I would talk about our time serving in the military, fishing in his new boat and genealogy because he helped many in our ward get started with research. Sherrie and I will miss Chuck with his friendly smile and his willing hands to help anyone in need. I can see Chuck and Jolene together again and happy with the knowledge of eternal families.

Oh where to start, Chuck has been a beam of light to the Bennion home for the past 8 yrs. We only wish we had known him much much sooner. He would often head over across the street the moment he saw a project going on and lend a helping hand. Weather it was leveling a fence, removing trees, getting a haircut, or hanging out in the shop with Bart, we loved having Chuck around. Our kids call him “Grandpa Chuck” and he was just that to them. We will never forget the way he smiled and laughed, the way he teared up as he spoke of Jolene, and the many stories and words of wisdom he shared with us. We cant wait to see him on the other side. Thanks for sharing your incredible father and grandpa with us!

Chuck will forever be a dear friend to me. He thinks so highly of everyone around him, and I was lucky enough to be someone who learned and grew from knowing him. Chuck was a church leader for me in my youth, and I learned so much from him and gained a special forever friendship. We also shared in four-wheeling vacations and Lake Powell trips that were a summer highlight. Even when I moved away, he still emailed me on occasion and never missed a birthday to text me. I was heartbroken to hear he passed away, but have peace in my heart knowing him and Jolene are reunited. His love for her is exemplary to all. Heaven is sweeter with you there Chuck! I love you!
