Christel Scholand Obituary

Christel Scholand, 87, of Vinton, went into the presence of God on December 18, 2016.

She was preceded in death by her treasured husband, Otto Scholand. She leaves behind her daughters and sons-in-law, Claudia Scholand of Aschaffenburg, Germany, Stefanie and Roger Fowler of Roanoke, Virginia, and Annamarie and Jeff Kresge, also of Roanoke. In addition, she leaves a brother, Rev. Bernhard Blumberg of Unna, Germany, a sister-in-law, Hella Blumberg of Bremen, Germany and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

Christel served her community as Director of Thrasher Preschool in Vinton for many years, impacting numerous young lives. She was a faithful and active member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, where she sang in the choir and served in the Women’s Ministry. Particularly satisfying for Christel was her volunteer work with Good Samaritan Hospice.  An enthusiastic member of the German-American community in Roanoke, Christel shared her love of music and the German culture through involvement in the Cosmopolitan Club and Local Colors. Christel had the gift of always blooming where she was planted, spreading love and cheer in many circumstances. She will be remembered as a devoted wife and mother, caring neighbor, generous friend, and a true inspiration to all with whom she had contact. Her smile was infectious and her laughter contagious.

The family wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude to the many friends who remained faithful to Christel during good times and bad. Our deepest thanks to you – may God be with you.

The family will receive visitors at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel on Wednesday, December 21 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, 631 N. Jefferson St., Roanoke, at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 22, with the Rev. Mark White officiating, followed by interment at Sherwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, friends can commemorate Christel’s love of music by donating to WVTF Public Radio, 3520 Kingsbury Lane, Roanoke, VA 24014 or her love of nature by making a donation to Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway, 3300 Electric Road, Roanoke, VA  24018.

To the Scholand daughters - I loved your mother always, from the first day of preschool on. My mother worked with yours at Thrasher Preschool, with Mrs. Butterworth and Mrs Walker, and she still laughs about some of those stories. I also remember your Christmas tree and the real candles. But mostly that your mom and dad were genuinely kind people who always welcomed you and made you feel loved. Your mom has a special place in my heart. Bless you and keep you.

Dear Annamarie and Family,

I am so very sorry to hear of the loss of your dear mother. I have so many fond memories of she and your father and their great support of our work at WBHS. They were always there to support you and the band. Out annual trips to Thrasher for the preschool children to play our instruments was a highlight of the year.

Please accept our sincerest condolences.
