Cynthia Swarner Obituary
Cynthia Swarner, 88, former resident of Washington, passed away on December 16, 2024 in Redwood City, California.
A graveside service will be held at Oakdale Cemetery on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at 1:00pm, where she will be laid to rest next to David, her husband of 67 years.
Cynthia was born on April 17, 1936, in Bonne Terre, MO, the second of three children. She attended nursing school at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, where she met her husband, Dr. David Swarner. After raising their two children in Evanston, IL, David and Cynthia moved to Washington, NC in 1994, where Dr. Swarner established his medical practice. Cynthia had served as a church elder and sang in the First Presbyterian Church choir in Washington. She also volunteered over the years with numerous organizations including Eagle’s Wings Food Pantry, the Beaufort County Animal Shelter, Ruth’s House, and as a nurse with the American Red Cross. She was also an experienced gardener.
After her husband’s death in January 2024, Cynthia moved to Redwood City, CA to be near to her son’s family. She went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, December 16, 2024. She is survived by her daughter, Kristina (John), son Mark (Kerri), and five grandchildren (Holli, Joelle, Evan, Aubrey, and Sara).
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Washington, NC, or to the Beaufort County Humane Society.

Cynthia was a lovely lady, and I was privileged to know her and David through First Presbyterian Church and within the Washington community. Cynthia was a tenor in both the FPC Choir and the Beaufort County Choral Society when I was conducting both groups in the mid-1990s to early 2000s. I appreciated her adding her voice--and warm smile--to both groups. What a delightful person. While I am sorry for your loss, I hope that your good memories of time with Cynthia will, in time, lead you from grief to joy, in celebration of her many years on this earth. God bless all of you.
