Daniel Whitney Obituary

Lincoln-Daniel Edward Whitney, 70, husband of Diane (Crocker) Whitney, died May 6, 2017, at a Boston hospital. He was born January 7, 1947, in Lincoln, the son of Edward and Laraine (Stratton) Whitney. Dan was a 1965 graduate of Mattanawcook Academy and a 1967 graduate of Beal Business College. He married his high school sweetheart on February 24, 1968. He served in the Army National Guard from 1967-1973. Dan started his career as a car salesman in 1970 at A&S Motors in Lincoln. In 1980, He and Diane, and Roger and Jay Cole purchased the local Ford dealership. At the time, Roger and Dan were the youngest Ford dealers in the country. After Roger's retirement in 2000, Dan became the sole owner and president of Cole-Whitney Ford. He will be remembered for his honesty, work-ethic, sense of humor and caring nature. In November 2007, Dan suffered a stroke leaving him with some disabilities, but his determination and drive to improve was an inspiration to many. Those personality traits mentioned, which brought him loyal customers since 1970, faithful employees and great friends over the years, never changed. He continued to work six days a week while going to physical therapy, faithfully, four days a week. He was a well-respected businessman in Lincoln and was loved and admired by all who knew him. His Cole-Whitney Ford family will miss him dearly. He never truly believed how much of an impact he had on others. He was a member of the Legion of Leaders, Boston Region, Ford Motor Company; Horeb Lodge No. 93, Lincoln; Anah Temple Shrine Club, Bangor; Northern Penobscot Shrine Club, Lincoln; Lincoln Rotary Club; and was Past-President of First Congregational Church Men's Club; In his spare time he enjoyed 4-wheeling, fishing and hunting. Time spent on the pontoon boat in the summer and a week at hunting camp in November brought him great joy. In addition to his wife, Diane, he is survived by two children, Donna Bard and her husband, Michael, and Darren Whitney and his partner, Deena Crocker; one grandson, Leo Leeman; a brother, Joe Whitney and his wife, Bernette. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, nephews and aunt. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son-in-law, Mark Mulligan; and his father-in-law. A graveside service will be held 1 pm Wednesday, May 10, at Lincoln Cemetery. There will be a casual gathering of family and friends at Cole-Whitney Ford following the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Mark Mulligan Scholarship Fund or to NPT Region III Automotive Program.

Diane, I'm so sorry for your loss. It is so hard but you were so strong and so glad that you and I met for a little bit at Brigham & womens. I didn't have a chance to say how sad I felt when I saw that the conference room was reserved for you and your family at 8 in the morning. We only met for a brief time but I felt like we were friends. So that being said I'm sorry my friend for Your loss.
Best to you, Donna and Darren

Diane, Darren and Donna,
I was so sad when Abby called to tell me this news. I will forever picture Danny leaned up against the railing in front of the garage keeping an eye on Main Street. Darren though it's not the same, know that I have a Dad you can borrow anytime you need to.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Danny's family. I'm very sorry for your loss. I have fond memories of sitting in Danny's office and listening to him as he leaned way back in his chair, arms over his head, sleeves rolled way up and him sharing his advice with me about the Town. And when he really wanted to make a point, he would spring forward, rest his elbows on his desk, and in a low voice, repeat the point he wanted to make sure I understood. I really admired how supportive he was of Lincoln too. His pride of the town was contagious. Dan made a great impression on me and I only wish more people were like him. I am grateful for having known him.

I was so very sorry to hear this news. Danny was always so good to me (as was Diane!). I remember as a young girl that it was obvious to me how in love they were with each other - I remember going to their wedding (probably my first!). I was honored to care for Donna and Darren in the summers when they were little. Danny used to pick me up every morning and as I'd get in his pick-up, he always chanted, "Mornin, Hollyhock"! He gave me the same greeting the last time I ran into him at the High Street Market recently and it made me laugh! My thoughts haven't been far from Diane, Donna & Darren and the Crocker family. Love to all of you!

I have many fond memories of Dan. From the days of playing basketball in Phil Gray's barn; haying with Hollis for Horace Wyman; working for the state on the roads with our dads; spending time at camp on Medunkeuk Lake with Dad, Jim, Lester, Philo, Pop, Calhoun and the rest of the gang and, so many more memories too numerous to mention here.
Our condolences to Diane, Donna and Darren. Dan was a good friend to Mary and me. May he rest in peace.

I am without the appropriate words.......still cannot wrap my head around it all. I can't begin to tell you how very sorry and saddened that I am. Danny is "family" to me and has always been so good to me that I cannot envision a visit to Lincoln without a visit to his office for a sit down chat and catching up on life, and kids....or to have my "white Canadian mints" from his candy jar...or to gaze at that beautiful trout on his wall in his office....he is going to be missed by all who knew and loved him....not the least of whom is me...Love to all of you....Diane, Donna and Darin....

"Danny & Diane". There will be a void felt by everyone he has connected with..... family, friends, employees and our community.
