Deane Nelson Obituary

Deane was the son of Agnes and Carl Nelson and the youngest of 4 boys. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Valerie, daughters Tamara (Jeff) Darbin, Brenda (Dave) Wilner, bonus daughter and son, Stephanie Tyson and Jay (Christel) Gordon. He also leaves 2 brothers, Stan Nelson and Alan Nelson, 8 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter, nephews, nieces, in-laws and friends.

Deane was an avid amateur astronomer and enjoyed playing his guitars and other string instruments, we have been blessed daily by his music and great sense of humor.

He was truly a wonderful man who loved and was loved by his family. We miss him but feel grateful for the time he shared with us.

Deane and I were next door neighbors and best friends from about the 4th grade until he moved away before high school. He was always unassuming and easy to be with. My parents thought he was quite mannerly for a young boy. We had a lot of fun together, not the least of which was stringing a line for ship-to-shore phones (his dad had brought from Todd Shipyard) between our houses so we could play checkers after going to bed with flashlights on numbered boards. As adults, Deane visited me once in Monroe, but we lost track of one another after that. I recognized his picture immediately; he changed very little over the years. Very sorry we didn't maintain contact.

I had the pleasure to know Deane because he married my good friend, Valerie. We visited several times and I knew he was dedicated to help care for dear Stephanie. I don't think there could have been a more wonderful person in Valerie and Stephanie's lives. We all have lost a friend indeed. At my last visit I learned of his interest in Astronomy and saw all his instruments. What a delight to learn more about Deane. May he rest in peace. And may Valerie and Stephanie have peace too knowing that they had him in their lives for those many years.

Deane Nelson was always pleasant, agreeable and considered it a blessing to be able to care for Stephanie. I hoped to hear more of his guitar playing. He will be missed.

Deane was the best thing to happen to my Mom and Stephanie. He was the epitome of a father and husband. Our lives were better with him in it.
