Dennis Fitzgerald Obituary

Dennis J. Fitzgerald of Elmhurst, age 78. Beloved husband of Nancy, nee Sullivan; loving father of Brian (Barbara), Kevin (Jane), Erin and Jeremiah (Kyra) Fitzgerald; proud grandfather of Jack, Luke, Liam, Lily, Eleanore, Marty, Sean, Maura, Nora, Salma, Matéa, Gaél and Esmé; dear brother of Noreen, Jeremiah, the late Patrick and the late Kathleen “Teen”; fond uncle of many.

Dennis had a deep love for and commitment to Nancy and the family they built together. He found great joy in spending time with his children and grandchildren and spent countless hours watching them compete in the sports they loved. Dennis built a remarkable career defined by creativity, innovation, and human connection. After three decades in the advertising and marketing fields, he founded DesignCentrix, a trade show and live event company, and PanoScape, an interactive technology company. Both ventures embodied his passion, curiosity, and love of learning, as well as his deep interest in understanding people. Throughout his life and career, Dennis met—and remained connected to—many who were drawn to his personable nature, quick wit, gift for storytelling, and enduring sense of humor.

I heard of his death a few minutes ago by phone, far too late to attend. Our parents were fast friends for years, and used to dine out occasionally together with the Staniceks in Oak Park area. I saw Dennis and Nancy a few times over the decades at Ascension reunions. I remember he got tall early and was such a lovely engaging person. I offer all sympathy to Nancy and the family. The picture shown reveals his personality.

Oh no! He really hung in there through the years. Technology was good to his heart. We had pleasurable discussions that usually solved many problems. His barbecuing was legendary. His network of humans was untouchable. His Tesla was a gem. I’ve missed him and I’ll miss him. Nancy and I are sorry for your’s and the family’s grief. He was a gift!

My first memory of Denny was when I was about 5 years old. I'd seen him at family events but this was the first time I engaged with him. He was dropping furniture to our house in Northbrook and my Dad was so happy to see him. He talked to all of us - joked and laughed. I remember thinking "Denny is so cool! I want to be like him." And he was cool, throughout his entire life. Every time I spoke with him, I felt like it was a sunny day. I really liked the way that he was close to each of his children, invested in them as people, and enjoyed knowing each of their friends at an intimate level. And I admired how he absolutely adored his wife. My Dad said that he could always count on Denny if he needed help, and for me that statement spoke to Denny's commitment to his family and friends, and to the integrity of his character. He is a great example to us of how to live a life of virtue. He was a wonderful nephew to my father and a great cousin to me. We may live without him, but I will always think of him.
