Derrick Spalt Obituary

Derrick Forrest Spalt was born on March 6, 1966 and entered the Gates of Heaven on March 23, 2024.

Beloved and loving husband of Sheila Spalt (nee Basler) of 32 years. Loving father of Chelsea (Nathan) Baker and Holly (Luc) Surges. Proud and loving grandfather and "Big Papi" of Henry, Noah and Bella. Dearest son of Stella Spalt (nee Mickey) and the late Donald Spalt. Dear son-in-law of Wayne Basler, the late Elizabeth "Betty" Basler and Doris Resinger-Basler.  Dear brother of Gretchen Spalt and Heidi (Jonathan) Hastings. Dear uncle, cousin and friend of many. He is also survived by his four-legged companion, Eloise "Ellie", whom he loved to give belly rubs to.

Derrick’s personality was larger than life! He was humorous and witty, but also compassionate, selfless, hardworking and caring.  Derrick was well known for his story telling and great advice on life.  He made everyone feel so special and loved.

Derrick worked for Kellogg’s for almost 25 years, most recently as a Sr. Director of Grocery.  Throughout his life, he loved family vacations, barbequing, coaching sports for his daughters, mowing the grass, golfing, playing rugby, tailgating at Mizzou, and playing pickleball.  His two latest passions in life were playing cornhole and being the CEO of “Barn Again”.  But most of all, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Derrick will be missed greatly by family and friends, but his legacy will never be forgotten.

Services:  A private mass of Catholic burial will be conducted. A celebration of Derrick's life will be held at a later date.  Derrick loved his kids and looked forward to spoiling his grandchildren.  We know he would love to make an impact on another child’s life, donations can be made to Make A Wish Foundation Missouri- Kansas in his name. As a service of the SCHRADER Funeral Home and Crematory, friends may sign the family's on-line guestbook at Schrader.com.

Derrick, I just found the news. I'm deeply sorry, we never caught up again. We all grew up on The Rock, it didn't matter if it was for a long or short time. It's been 40 plus years since we left. I want to say Thank you for making my life a better. I hope we meet again in the next life.

I knew Derrick in High School on Okinawa, he was a true friend, with a personality the size of the sky. I'm happy he created the life and family he had, he will truly be loved & missed by his Oki-family too. God Bless you ALL.

What I most admired about Derrick was his dedication to his family. I recall when he took the assignment with Wal-Mart around Rogers, Arkansas. Instead of making his wife and children leave their friends, family and lives in the St. Louis area, he moved down there. He came home on the weekends to be with them. He did what he had too for his career but, still put his family first. May his memory be eternal.

We knew the Spalt family from the military in Okinawa Japan. Cindy worked with Stella at the Naval Hospital in Okinawa. We knew Derrick as a teenager. He was outgoing, witty, handsome and a confident young man. We did not see the family after Don retired from the Air Force and they left Okinawa in the early 1980s. We kept in touch with the family through Christmas cards for many years. The Spalt family are some of the finest people we have had the pleasure meeting. We are heartbroken to learn of Derrick's death. Prayers for your family.

Derrick was my manager at Kellogg prior to my retirement in 2015. He was such a kind man, and even when the work was challenging, Derrick found a way to uplift the team with leadership and humor. He talked about Sheila and the girls regularly, beaming with pride and love. I will never forget, and will be eternally grateful, for Derrick's kindness while my sister battled cancer, and for her last month in hospice that he afforded me with her. Such a good man....there is a special place in heaven for Derrick.

Derrick was my manager for a few years in at Kellogg's. So many great stories with such an amazing manager and friend! Derrick overnighting me the movie Kicking and Screaming when I was coaching kindergarten soccer. Derrick showing up to watch my kid play hockey in St. Louis. Derrick taking our Kellogg's team out for an epic night of fun in Chicago. Derrick guiding me on how to get better results with my customer. He cared deeply and was rooting us all on, not just at work but for our families too. What a great legacy knowing he was beloved by so many!

I miss you so much already Derrick! I am so thankful for all of the amazing adventures that you, me, Sheila and Mike had through the decades. From drinking pina coladas and margaritas in Mexico, to cheering on the Tigers in Columbia, to watching sunsets in Jamaica, to rolling the dice in Vegas, to tearing up the Power & Light District in KC, to consuming way too many dirty monkeys in the Caribbean and the list goes on and on. You have always been my “bonus” brother and I am forever grateful for the years we had together. Rest assured that we will always take care of Sheila, Chelsea, Holly, the boys and the grandkids and will always love them fiercely just as you did. Until we meet again amigo – We love you . Always remembered ~ forever loved!

Derrick lead a sales team with Kellogg that I was fortunate to be a part of. In addition to being a great leader, he was an authentically kind and caring person that was always focused on the well-being of the people he managed. He always teased me for loving 80's music as he did as well. My heart goes out to the family.

I got to know Derrick, when he started selling his tables and barnwood at the mall. He always had a story and could always make me smile. He was one of the most colorful, energetic and expressive people I have ever known. He was a good friend, and a fantastic family man. I am truly sorry for your loss. He will always be watching over. you.

At work, Derrick was so kind and inspiring to everyone, no matter their title or background. He was the same good man to those he just met or worked with for years. He regularly shared how much he loved his family and asked about mine so often. He was such a great business person— he took the time to learn things and he built trust so quickly. He did the right thing even when it was hardest and listened to others. He cared about his customers and was so patient in teaching. This is why people wanted Derrick Spalt to be their Teammate, their manager, and on their Sales Team. I already miss his humorous texts, his business mind and the way he could tell a story in a big group.so much laughter and wisdom! All this is why so many of us from Kellogg and our Customers are right now sending our prayers, talking about his legacy and laughing about the good times.
