Dr. Alexander Savran Obituary

Alexander Donath Savran passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2024 after a long illness.  He was born in Medford, Massachusetts on April 6, 1938 to Charles and Marion Savran. He attended Brown and Nichols Prep School (Cambridge, Mass.), Tufts University (BS and later Oral and Maxilla Facial Surgery), and McGill University (DDS). He completed his internship and residency at Boston City Hospital. Alex had an oral surgery practice in Medford, MA and he later taught at Tufts University.

He was President of the Massachusetts Society of Dental Anesthesiology (1974), Board member of the Massachusetts Medford Red Cross, and a member of both Kiwanis (Mass.) and the Lions Club (NJ). He was proud to serve as a “Big Brother.”

Alex (Doc) was a real sports enthusiast whether as a player or a fan. He was considered one of the best hockey goalies in his pre-collegiate years. He was the #1 tennis player at Tufts for four years.

In 1971 he married his beloved Sharon (Wolf) Savran and they enjoyed 53 adventurous years together. In 1987 they left Massachusetts and purchased a Standardbred Training and Racing Facility.

Alex (dubbed a Living Legend by his friends and peers) enjoyed sitting behind his own horses as an amateur driver. He had the claimer of the year in 1990. He was lucky and talented enough to turn his avocation into his vocation. To know him was to love him.

Son of the late Charles and Marion Savran, he was predeceased by his brother, Mark Savran. He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Savran; his sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Paul Amaru; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Bonnie and Bill Rudner as well as many nieces and nephews.

In keeping with Alex and Sherri’s relaxed style, a gathering to share stories and memories of Alex will be held on Sunday, May 19th from 2-4pm at the Peppler Funeral Home, 114 S. Main St. Allentown, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Alex’s name to the Standardbred Retirement Foundation, 42 Arneytown-Hornerstown Rd, Cream Ridge, NJ 08514 (www.adoptahorse.org) Popcorn Park Zoo, 1 Humane Way, Forked River, NJ 08731 (www.ahscares.org) Grace Healthcare Services, 105 Fieldcrest Ave, Suite 402, Edison, NJ 08837 (www.gracehcs.com/donation-program) or to a charity that is dear to your heart.

We learned a bit late about the loss of Alex. We met Sharon and Alex via Chenery Middle School in Belmont, MA in 1971 where she was a guidance counselor, and I was French teacher. Alex was such a vibrant, intelligent, and energetic person. Sharon and I shared a love of animals, especially dogs. Alex loved horses and was a talented rider. Visiting them was always an adventure! He gave the ultimate gift to science in order to help others.

Doc was a one and only kind of human being. He was kind and loving to all that came into his life. My grandchildren were blessed to have been born across the road of Sweetcritter farm.
Doc and his lovely wife Sharon opened up
and shared a beautiful appreciation and love for all of the animal kingdom.
He raised and trained race horses with . .a love and passion. His farm included many different species of animals such as ponies, goats, rabbits, chickens and many other exotic species. They raised these other animals for the enjoyment of the neighborhood kids, Teaching them love and compassion. for all of God’s critters
My grandchildren were very fortunate and loved going over to their farm to play and admire all of the animals. Doc and his lovely wife Sharon spent many hours teaching them the difference between all the species and their habitats.
My grandchildren are now nearlng adulthood but always refect back to their happy memories spending time with Doc and Sharon with love

Doc was an inspiration for us and our grandchildren. His warmth and kindness to them at Sweet Critters gave us a love for him and all animals, great and small.

Alex was a special person. He was a true gentleman. He was interested in everyone. It didn't matter who you were or what you did for a living; he treated you with respect and was ready to be your friend. He will truly be missed.

I met Alex in 1965, when he was a resident in Oral Surgery at Boston City Hospital, where he was a friend of my wife's brother, a resident in Ophthalmology.
We became good friends during my time at Harvard graduate school. We played tennis and squash regularly. He also extracted my wisdom teeth!
After he completed his residency, he bought a house in Medford and turned it into his home and office. I helped him set up the house, and my wife and I visited it regularly.
We also spent time with him during the summers at his mother's beach home in Nantasket Beach.
When I completed by graduate school studies in 1969, my wife and I moved to Zurich, Switzerland, leaving our car under his care, in the backyard of his house.
Returning from Switzerland in Jan. 1971, we traveled to Medford to retrieve our car. There we met Shari, whom he had met while we were in Switzerland. We were invited to their upcoming wedding, scheduled for April.
We attended the wedding in Canton (or North Canton?), Ohio, where I served as one of the wedding's ushers. It was a glorious event.
In the ensuing years, when we lived in Westchester County, NY, we maintained our friendship, visiting his farm in Cream Ridge, NY, and staying there overnight.
One other memory was having Alex and Shari join us to see Les Paul, the inventor of the electric guitar, perform with his combo at the Iridium Jazz Club in NY City. During the intermission, we all went backstage to talk with Les, ask questions and share many memories with Les.
These are all wonderful memories. Barbara and I shall miss Alex, and we extend our deepest condolences to Shari.

Our deepest sympathy to Sherri and family with Doc's passing. We will always appreciate all of Doc's help with our shared foster horse, Greta, and all the knowledge and love for horses that he imparted. We will always remember the fun times we had at the farm with Sherri and Doc as we learned about caring for horses, while having great conversations and enjoying their wonderful company. We will never forget our good friend, Doc. May he rest in peace.

What a privilege to call Alex my cousin. He was also our dear friend. Many relatives write you off because of differing beliefs or practices, not so with Alex & Shari.
Full support and true friends for so many years.
Remembering when Shari asked us to convince Alex to take a vacation. The cruise to Bermuda! Spectacular memories of the Cousin’s parties they hosted at the farms.
Always present in our heart!

Sorry to hear of Doc's passing. He was one of the more interesting characters that I came across in my 50 years as a Standardbred farrier. It brings back many memories of decades of Tuesdays spent out at Freedom Farm with Doc and Sherry , Carlo Poliseno , Bob Kirby, Allen Webster Tony Reggio along with so many others who came and went down that driveway. Shoeing Super Scotch SJ during his best days will always be one of the treasured highlights of my career. That was a helluva run. RIP Doc!
