John Segreti MD, 69, died peacefully on June 16 at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. He was born on August 5, 1954, in the town of Carolei in southern Italy to Giuseppe and Giuseppina Segreti. John grew up in Chicago, became a US citizen after high school, and was a graduate (valedictorian) of Cathedral High School, Loyola University and Rush Medical College. He married Jeanne Martinez in 1980 after they met in a disco dance class. John and Jeanne eventually moved to Oak Park, where they have lived for over 30 years. John specialized in Infectious Disease medicine, was the Epidemiologist for Rush University. At the time of his death, John was the current president of the Rush medical staff, and the editor of the medical journal, Private Practice Infectious Disease. John was on the medical team for the Chicago White Sox, providing consultations during the COVID outbreak. During his career, he traveled and lectured in many countries around the world, in Europe, South America and Asia. John was very athletic and loved running, boxing and ballroom dancing (an evolution from the early disco dance days). John combined two of his biggest passions – sports and his children - by coaching his daughter in soccer, and both of his sons in youth baseball for many years. John is survived by his wife, Jeanne; daughter Dania Ryczek, sons Giancarlo (James Meurer) Segreti, Stefan Segreti, and the absolute delights of his life – grandchildren Ava Ryzcek (9) and Liam Ryzcek (5). John is also survived by sisters, Theresa (Tom) Foutts, Pia (Robert) Mack, brothers Frank (Anita) Segreti, Fabio (Debbie) Segreti, sister-in-law, Ida Segreti, sister-in-law Sandra Martinez, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins throughout the USA, Canada and his native Italy. John was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Salvatore Segreti. Family and friends are invited to Galewood Funeral Home, 1857 N. Harlem Ave, Chicago, from 4p – 8pm on Sunday, June 23, to reminisce and honor John’s life. A funeral mass will be held Monday 6/24/24 at 10 am at St. Giles Church 1045 Columbian St. Oak Park, IL

Condolences to Dr Segreti's family. Even in high school ,at Cathedral it was obvious that John was incredibly intelligent and kind. He was a quiet light, but you knew there was this genius walking in those halls. Through his work, many lives were saved. May he be welcomed into heaven. Classmate 1972 Cathedral High.

As a 3rd year medical student, I did an infectious disease rotation at Rush in 1997, just as medications were developed and made available to treat HIV/AIDS. Dr. Segreti was an inspiration and role model for his treament of all of our patients. Since then, I have always remembered his calm demeanor, and kindness. He will be missed.

I was a fellow with Dr. Segreti from 2002-2004. He was so well-respected. Dignified, calm, good-humored and smart! 20 years out of practice, I truly rely on knowledge gained from him regularly to this day, especially related to prosthetic joint infections and endocarditis. I'm so grateful to have to have had the opportunity to train with him.

I had the honor to work with John for 19 years in Infection Control at Rush University Medical Center and most recently at Rush Oak Park Hospital. He will be remembered for his great caring to his patients, his expertise in medicine and infectious diseases and his contribution to science. He taught me so much and will miss him as a resource and great physician. My sympathies to his family.

In loving memory of a wonderful person. I’m so sorry for your lost. Worked with him for many years at Rush. Will miss talking with him about football and his favorite baseball team the White Sox. Our infection prevention and control bi-monthly meeting won’t be the same. May God bless your family!

The most understated and humble physician I have met. John will be the forever dance partner to my friend Jeanne and part of an incredible, loving Italian family. Much love to Jeanne and the entire Segretti family. Your legacy is immense and your grandkids and kids are so lucky to have you as their guide.

I met John at The White Collar Boxing Club in Chicago in the early 90's. Such a fine man. All of us from the club loved him. We'll miss him. One of the good guys.
