Dr. William "Bill" W. Baak
Beloved husband of Betty Baak (Nee Krueger); father and father-in-law of Dr. Steven (Julie) Baak and Dr. Katherine (Douglas) Placek of Yardley, PA; grandfather of Sara Baak, Emma (Michael) Gentry, and Kristina Placek, and a dear friend to many.
Bill graduated from Southwest High School (Minneapolis, Minnesota) in 1950. He completed his undergraduate and medical training at the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1957. After receiving his M.D., he joined the Air Force and was stationed at Eglin Air Force Base in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Then Bill took a Residency in Child Psychiatry at University of Colorado, Denver.
After completing his training, Bill took his first job at the Community Mental Health Center in San Diego, California, where he helped develop and expand the program. In 1965, he began his private practice treating children and families in LaJolla, California. In addition to seeing patients full time, Bill taught at the UCSD Medical School and supervised psychiatry residents. Bill eventually retired in 1999.
A dedicated advocate for children, Bill enjoyed serving on the board of La Jolla Country Day School. This community of teachers, administrators and students was very important to him, as both of his children, Steven and Katie, attended all 12years of school there. Despite a very busy schedule, he always made time to attend their athletic events, musical performances and plays. Bill and his wife, Betty, were familiar faces in the bleachers and in the audience, cheering on both kids and their classmates.
In 2012 Bill and Betty moved to St. Louis, Missouri. To the delight of Bill and Betty, the extended Volk family welcomed them with open arms and gave them their first experience at being part of a large family, something they had never had, but always wanted. Bill greatly enjoyed playing his clarinet in the Oasis Orchestra and performing with the Shriner’s band. Bill enjoyed his weekly clarinet practice session with Joe Volk.
Bill loved to fish, and, in fact, went lake fishing with Betty for their honeymoon. Both their children were raised to share that love of the outdoors and patiently waiting for a bite on their hook. Bill and Steven took many trips together over the years to fish various lakes and oceans. Some of Bill’s favorite moments in St. Louis were ones on the dock, or out on the lake, behind his son Steven’s home.
Bill really enjoyed his life. He cherished his wife, children and three granddaughters. He loved his extended St. Louis and Pennsylvania families and the many special friends cultivated over the years. Bill genuinely liked and cared about people. He helped many children and families, and, even in retirement years, touched many lives. He lived with gusto and followed many interests, up to his last days. Bill will be remembered, loved and very much missed, always.

There is a man I have been wanting to speak with for some time now, again. Somehow I may have missed my chance. We had some great, and not so comfortable talks. I miss him.
His cheerful spirit, riding his motorcycle, and so much more!
I have wanted to speak with him for some time again, mabye through his children, oh my, how details in life are something else!
Miss visiting this man.

The Baak family are some of the classiest people you'll ever meet. My condolences go out to the family on Dr. Baak's recent passing - truly an inspiration to all he touched in life! Those who fish know that some of the best angling happens in the Spring - I'm sure he's sittin on the dock of the bay waiting for the next bite...

My heart goes out to Betty and the Baak family. I only knew Bill for a very short time, but found him to be extremely kind, considerate, and compassionate about doing whatever he could for his family. Seemed to be a wonderful soul. No doubt his presence will be missed. Thinking of you all.

Ican go on and on about the loving, caring, funny moments shared with Bill - and Betty. They enriched our lives so much..we shared polar bear puns, Death Valley, photo trips, fossils, Messy Messy, etc..so on and so forth. I will always remember his quivering chin at the sheer beauty of a scene in Death Valley. How wonderful! Truly Bill and Betty are very special people!

Bill and Betty Baak were such an important part of our lives. Betty my heart goes out to you with love and prayers. Bill was a wonderful friend. . He was so supportive of my work with children and my husband Don'a friendship and shared sense of humor. Men only Breakfasts at Hob Nob Hill in San Diego with Bill, Jack Olson, Jay Atherton and Don were a highlight for all. Bill wrote insightful prose and poems about his experiences with children. Throughout Don's fight with Parkinson's Bill was there to help, providing counsel and comfort. I'm sure they're having a good laugh in heaven right now. Betty, it's so hard to say goodbye to the love of your life. I know. But you will learn as I have that sorrow is not forever, love is. God bless you and your family. Tommie

I have known the Baaks since 1961. We both served in the Air Force at Eglin Air Force Base. There were 40 doctors there and Bill was the leader of the medical staff in its tensions with the Military Medical people. He was a respected and calming figure, who soothed the tensions of the beast in all of us. Betty was his sidekick and gentle soulmate;
After the military, the Baaks settled in La Jolla
California, and we often met for a meal and chats. It was always wonderful being with the Baaks.
bill was always fun-loving, too. A great sense of humor.
Bill will always be missed as a philosopher and a person who understood people in a special God-given way. I wish his philosophies and comments could be published as Bill might have a solution to the societal frictions of today
I great person passes on

Betty,
Michelle and I were deeply saddened by the news of Bills passing. Our heartfelt condolences to you and the family. We will always cherish the great memories we created while visiting you both in San Diego and seeing you at Doug & Katies home. It is hard to forget someone who gave you so much to remember and always shared his sense of humor. That is why we will always remember sharing Bills favorite treat of chocolate covered Oreos.
Please know our loving thoughts embrace you each and every day. And you hold a special place in our hearts. With deepest sympathy for your loss.

Dr. Baak gave me two pieces of advice that Ive shared with hundreds of parents and teachers. I asked him once what he considered the most important thing you can teach your child. Without hesitation, he said, Teach them to ask for what they want. That is lifelong power. The second happened when we faced a challenging decision regarding our child's education-one in which I was receiving strong resistance to change in spite of my wish to pursue it. He said, Your child gets one run around the track, and you are the Engineer. He gave me the confidence to act and successfully move forward.
I like to think that these are pebbles tossed in the lake and rippling beyond where we can see, even now. I appreciate having known Dr. Baak and have shared his humor and storytelling many times over. Thank you, Dr. Baak.

I miss you dad! Steve

Dr. Baak was an icon in my early life--my childhood best friend's father, and always a warm, welcoming, comforting figure. His smile was infectious. His laugh was splendid. On one exceedingly difficult occasion, he was called into school to explain depression to my brother's second grade class after the tragic suicide of their teacher. He knew so well how to speak to children and honor their personhood and understanding. We kept up correspondence through decades of holiday letters post-high school. Dr. Baak - I can call him nothing else - this world will truly miss you.
