Elaine Cerwin, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on January 2, 1936, in Waukesha, Wisconsin, to Henry and Mary (Ruff) Mittelsteadt, Elaine lived a life filled with adventure, generosity, and love.
Elaine graduated from Carroll College and married the love of her life, Robert Cerwin, in 1956. Together, they built a beautiful life, raising four children and welcoming nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In 1958, Elaine and Robert moved to Burlington, Wisconsin, where she dedicated herself to raising their children, working as a substitute teacher, and supporting their community.
Elaine and Robert’s deep commitment to service led them to become actively involved with Rotary International, traveling to 54 countries across six continents to represent the organization’s mission. She was also a passionate advocate for children, co-founding the U.S. chapter of the British charity Hope and Homes for Children, which aids orphans affected by war and disaster.
In 1991, Elaine and Robert moved to North Carolina to be closer to family, later embarking on a new adventure in Cuenca, Ecuador, in 2011 before returning to North Carolina in 2015. Throughout her life, Elaine found joy in sewing, quilting, and decoupage, and she delighted in cooking for her loved ones. She lived fully, embracing every opportunity with enthusiasm and grace, often saying she had done everything she ever wanted to do.
Elaine is survived by her children, Debra Cerwin, Todd Cerwin (Deanna Cerwin), and Janet Johnson (Dwight Johnson), as well as her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert, and their beloved son, Eric (Renee Cerwin).
Elaine’s legacy of love, service, and adventure will live on in all who were fortunate to know her. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to Hope and Homes for Children or a charity of your choice.
