Erik Olsen Obituary

Erik H. Olsen

Hyde Park-Erik H. Olsen died peacefully at his home on Thursday, December 21, 2017 due to complications from ALS.

Born on May 31, 1932 in Omaha, Nebraska, he was the son of C. Arild and Elise (Hermansen) Olsen. His early years were spent living in Des Moines, Iowa; Lincoln, Nebraska; Cincinnati, Ohio and Washington, D.C., but summers were always spent with his Danish farming family in the place of his heart, Hay Springs, Nebraska.

The beginnings of his interest in U.S. History was fostered by the proximity of the Lakota people to his family home, and took further root when the family moved to Germany after World War II, where he attended schools in Berlin, Nurnberg, and graduating from Frankfurt American High School.

After high school, he worked for the State Department and traveled extensively throughout Europe. He attended Worchester College in Ohio and joined the Army during the Korean Era. He was stationed in the Territory of Alaska where he served as company clerk.

He continued his formal education at Fort Hayes University in Kansas where his sister Lois' husband, Al Dunavan was his gymnastics coach and with whom he shared a spirit of adventure. He was "Uncle Ole" to Lois and Al's children.

He spent time living in New York City and traveling before getting his master's degree at Springfield College. It was while attending Springfield that he fell in love with downhill skiing, eventually moving to Vermont to get his teaching license at UVM. He taught school in South Stratford, VT and the Mathison School in Barre, VT before finding his home at Peoples Academy in Morrisville, VT where he taught U.S. History for almost 30 years. He took great pride in P.A., kept the statistics at home basketball games and kept the time for home soccer games.

On June 17, 1968, he married the Home Economics teacher from "rival school", LUHS, Carol Gray, of Charlestown, NH. They settled at their home in Hyde Park, VT shortly after, where he was the best Dad ever to their four children. They were married for almost 50 years. His six granddaughters brought him great joy and were the apples of his eye.

Erik loved being part of the Gray family as one of the "outlaws" and was affectionately known as "Uncle Murph". His playful nature fit in perfectly with the big, loving family.

Erik was known for his sense of humor, his abilities as a story teller and for the interest in and personal connections he made with the many people in his life. He had a way of making everyone feel like they were his favorite, and that they were the most important person in the room. He never forgot a friend, including his former students.

He was predeceased by his parents, C. Arild Olsen and Elise (Hermansen) Olsen, his sister, Lois Dunavan and brother-in-law, Al Dunavan, brother-in-law (and fellow "outlaw"), Gary Kerozicky and sister-in-law, Jane (Gray) Grover.

Eric leaves his wife, Carol G. Olsen; His children, Elise Olsen and husband, Joshua Carlson; Amy Olsen and husband, David Masi; Marie Olsen and husband, Martin Thoeni and Thomas Olsen; his loving granddaughters, Janey, Laura, Sofie, Weslie, Drew and Hilde, who he adored; and many sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

A Celebration of Life and Sharing of Stories will be held Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Peoples Academy auditorium. Faith Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. Online condolences may be made by visiting faithfh.net.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lamoille Area Cancer Network (LACN), 198 Farr Avenue, Morrisville, VT 05661.

Mr Olsen you were the best teacher I a ever had. You were an inspiration and I have only the greatest respect for you. Year´s after school you said you felt like you had failed me. I was so lucky to be able to tell you that the opposite was true. You stood head and shoulders above the rest. Thank you Sir, you will be missed.

Carol, Elise, Amy, Marie, Tom, and grandchildren, I have been thinking of you. I am dressed and ready to come to the service, and my car won't start. I'm sorry I won't be there. You can be sure I am there in spirit! I know you know your husband/dad was so proud of all of you, as well he should be, and loved you dearly! May the memories and love he instilled in all of you hold you and give you strength and light today and forever.

Our sincere condolences to all the family. Eric ( he chastised me a few years ago at the dump for calling him Mr. Olsen) was a fondly remembered part of P.A. I also remember that friendly face when checking into a basketball game, and the encouraging words afterwards; no matter the outcome of the game. God bless.

Dear Carol and family,
Both Karen and I were deeply saddened to hear of Erik's passing. He, as you know, was one great guy who was highly thought of. Especially saddened were both Matthew and Jen who really respected Erik as a teacher. He not only taught them much about history but also about living a good life as well. The world has lost a great person.

So sorry to hear of Erik's passing. He was such a caring soul with a wonderful sense of humor. I've never forgotten how kind and thoughtful Erik was during my first year as a teacher at Peoples Academy. He would check in on me after school, ask me how my day went and was always encouraging. I knew that I was one of many on his list. He was that generous all of the time. When I think of Erik, I see him in his teaching attire, blue cardigan sweater over a short sleeve button down shirt , with his "to do list" stuck in the shirt pocket-and laughing, perhaps a little giggling too. He was a good man and will be missed.

I did not know Erik well, but I do know his daughter, Elise, & she is a wonderful example of goodness, strength& love. I'm sure Erik fostered those qualities in Elise& along with Carol created a loving environment for their family & ultimately , all the relationships they nurtured. Here is to a life of purpose, commitment & love.

For two generations of junior high students, Mr. Olsen was the door and candle to United States history (tandeming so well with the late Mrs. Viele and her world history teaching across the hall for many of those years). For those who dribbled the PA basketball court during the long winter basketball season or ran the soccer field many a late afternoon each fall, Mr. Olsen was the quiet and encouraging face at the scorer's table and on the soccer field sideline. The image of him walking the sideline preparing to blow the often welcome ending horn to a soccer game is the image that will most stay with me. The Class of 1982 was honored to have Mr. Olsen join us at our 25th reunion. He was a gentle man in the way a gentleman should be, and he leaves a wonderful legacy. Well done, Mr. Olsen. And thank you.

Dear Carol and all the Olsen family and friends, and in particular dear Elise, Josh, Sofie and Weslie,
Reading Erik's obituary was amazing. What a life he had and what a difference he made in so many lives! ALS may have taken him physically, but he still lived a full life and was able to take pleasure in his family. It is never easy to let go, but your wonderful memories and stories will carry on and help you. I know this in my own life from losing Matthew, and recently Mom . Keep the stories alive and be together for you are his legacy and he lives on through you.
Sending love and prayers,
Jo-Ann and Dante
