Ervin Hinds JR, MD Obituary

Erv Hinds of Littleton, CO passed away on August 26 after a courageous 13-month battle with cancer. Born September 1 in Denver to Pauline Wright Hinds and Dr. Ervin Arthur Hinds, Erv attended Graland, East High (class of 1959), and Colorado College (class of 1963). Erv graduated from Tulane Medical School (class of 1968) and served an internship and part of a surgical residency in Phoenix, before volunteering for service in Vietnam. In Vietnam, he served as a physician and was a commanding officer in the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles division. He finished his military service in Albuquerque and married Elizabeth Hogman MD (former wife). Erv completed an anesthesiology residency at the University of Colorado. He practiced anesthesiology in Santa Fe during the first part of his career. Later, he did a fellowship in acute, chronic, and cancer pain and became board certified in pain medicine. He was the founder and director of pain centers in both Santa Fe and Albuquerque.

Erv authored and published two books: “A Life Larger than Pain”, and “Healing the Pain of Heartache.”

He retired in 2015 and moved to Colorado to be near his children and grandchildren.

Erv spent as much time as possible in his favorite two places: his second home under Wolf Creek pass near Pagosa Springs; and doing medical mission volunteer work in Guaymas, Mexico with Franciscan priests. He was a loving father, dear friend, and an exceptionally caring and skilled physician. He was deeply spiritual, a practicing Quaker with an open heart to all practices that guided him closer to God and an ever increasing compassionate way of life. He was completely devoted to his family and friends. He lived life reaching out with kind, gentle arms, creating a feeling of lighthearted warmth everywhere he went. His lifelong commitment to humanity has benefited tens of thousands of people medically, personally, and spiritually.

Erv is survived by daughter Emily White (Jesse) and grandchildren Jay and Ellie; son Eric Hinds (Aleacia) and grandchildren Isabella, Gloria, and Cozette; sister Ann Tull; and longtime friend and dedicated caregiver Darren Dalton. Daughter Ellie preceded him in death.

A Celebration of Life will be held at his Wolf Creek property on Saturday, September 29th at noon.

I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Hinds passing. I only recently found out about this sad news. I met him as a patient at St. Vincent's Hospital in the 90's, when he anesthesized prior to a procedure. I told him he reminded me of family members in New York. I had remembered him and wondered where he was. Thirteen years later I became his patient at the Pain Clinic in Santa Fe. He was a thoughtful doctor and helped me to get over my lower back pain. Dr. Hinds was a very kind and considerate person. I have thought about him all these years. Some people touch your life in just a few moments. He was one of those persons. I am grateful to have met him. To his family and friends, I am so sorry for your loss.

"Dr. Hinds" was a kind Soul/Dr./Anesthesiologist/Author to me. I have only just learned of his "Graduation'. His book helped me when I lost my sister and then Father. In healthcare, if you've known hardship, you can imagine how much pain relief matters in so many ways.
I am grateful to have known him.

It has taken several weeks for me to accept that Erv is gone. I did not know he was battling cancer but I feel certain that he accepted that challenge with the same courage and faith that defined his remarkable life. Erv's impact on my life, and on the lives of so many, was immeasurable. We both attended East High in Denver where he was a student leader. It was at CC that we became close and lifelong friends. Although our lives eventually took different paths, we kept in contact until the past year. That is why his death came as such a shock. I will always be grateful for his friendship. His was a life well-lived and is an example for all; and, as so many have said, a very special light in our world has gone out. Rest in peace, dear Erv.
To his family whom he cherished, I send my deepest sympathy.

Dr. Hinds is the essence of love and kindness. He lived to help people and to make life a kinder, more gentle place for all living beings. I hadnt seen him for awhile, but thought of him often. He made an impression on me and others that taught us to feel with our hearts - not our fears. He adored his family. Sending you all love - know though, that his love will always be.

Erv was a mentor and role model for me in the early years 2000 when I started to practice pain. I will always remember him as not only an excellent physician, but especially a kind, loving, funny person to be around. He loved talking to me about Huế where he spent several years during the worst of the war, but still kept some very special loving memories from there, especially of the central Vietnamese people he came to know and appreciate. I am so saddened and devastated by the news of his passing, having not even known that he was ill! I am so sorry that I was not able to say goodbye. My prayers are with you both, Eric and Emily in this difficult time, and with you Ann, whom I met years ago with Erv. Rest In Peace Erv in Gods Kingdom. With much love and respect, LangHa and family.

What a blessing Dr. Erv was and still is to so many. How we wish we could hold onto him on this earth for many years. God loves his children and seems to take those who work the hardest home to Himself sooner than we would like where they are at rest.

Prayers for Emily and Eric and your families. Dr. Hinds was one of a kind! We had the outfitting business at Bruce Spruce where you all used to come and ride horses. Dr. Hinds had a gentle and kind spirit, but also tough as nails when it came to his beloved place at Wolf Creek, so glad he never sold out!

I began my career as a registered nurse at St. Vincent Hospital in 1979. I transferred to the recovery room the next year where I worked with Dr. Hinds. He was a most competent, caring & compassionate doctor. I am saddened by his passing but very glad he is not suffering. It was my pleasure to know him and work with him.

My condolences to Ervs family and friends. I saw Dr. Hinds in Santa Fe, Albuquerque and finally back in Santa Fe. He was ahead of his time in regard to patient care and best practices. As a previous health care worker and chaplain, I always appreciated when he could take time in our visits to discuss those things of a spiritual nature so profound in healing. His books, especially, A Life Larger Than Pain, helped me through years of treatment. He truly was a physician who healed mind, body and spirit. I know he rests in peace.

I am very sorry to read of Mr. Hinds' passing. I hope a passage that helps me, James 1:13, will be a help to all who love and miss him.
My regrets,

Erv and I met in the fall of 1959 as freshmen classmates at Colorado College and, later, as roommates at CC. Though we were, in many ways, very different, one from another, we remained very close friends for all the years that intervened until Erv lost his battle with cancer last month. Erv was always quite spiritual and very loyal to his friends. I was honored to have Erv serve as my Best Man upon my marriage to my wife, Karen, in 1967. I will think of him often and will greatly miss him. Karen and I take comfort, though, in knowing that his end-of-life suffering has also come to an end.

Erv was a ray of sunshine everyday or night that I had the honor of working with him. His kindness, and gentleness with each of his patients never faltered. His love of people and animals was unbelievable. His love for his family was strong and endearing. There are few people that could have matched Erv. His was a love of life, genuine care for everyone and everything in this world. He will be greatly missed. For those of us that he touched, he will live on and we will never forget him. Rest Erv, it is your time to to relax.

Dear Emily and Eric, really sad to see your dad has passes. He was special. We met at Carl Miller's Gym in the early 1980's and saw each other often over the years. I enjoyed getting to know your dad. He spoke of you two often and was proud of you. I will have fond memories of Erv. Take Care. Eric Sommer

I am heartbroken to hear this news. I have been worried. Erv and I crossed paths at our local gym. A gem of a man he was, and I am honored to have been blessed by having him in my life. We had much in common: ranching ancestors, love of the Colorado mountains, work in medicine, spiritual beliefs, joy of exercise and running, helping people, writing books, and both of us fighting significant health battles. Erv was one of the strongest men I have known. His fighting spirit inspired me, and still does.

I miss seeing him at the gym. My heartfelt sympathies to his family and those who love him. God speed, Erv. Blessings to his kids and grandkids. May God wrap you in his loving arms.
