Eugenia Marie Ciabattari Johnson DeFuria of Leesburg, Virginia, passed away on November 17, 2025.
Born in 1948 in Oak Park, Illinois, Jean spent her early years in the Chicagoland area before eventually making her home in Virginia. She was an independent spirit who lived life on her own terms, with a distinctive sense of style and humor.
One of Jean's greatest personal accomplishments was putting herself through college and graduating at the age of 45, a milestone that reflected her determination and perseverance. She had a love of good food, appreciated the finer things in life, and built meaningful relationships with friends who appreciated her particular tastes and outlook.
Jean's favorite things included practicing her faith, entertaining, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She approached life and family in her own way, and those who knew her will remember her as a strong and memorable presence in their lives.
She is survived by her daughter, Katie, and son-in-law, Jeff; her son, Jamie, and his wife, Crystal; her grandchildren, Jeremy (Alexis), Kassidy, and Mia; and her great-grandchildren, Jaxon and Addison.
A service will be held at Saint Matthew’s in Sterling, Virginia, on Saturday, November 22, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a celebration of life to follow at a location to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, offerings may be made to the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia, or to a charity of your choice, in Jean's memory.

We are writing this with a heavy heart. Periodically Jean would call just to check up on us and it was always a pleasure to hear from her. We loved her and hearing about her life and “catching up”. We will miss these calls. Rest in peace, Jean. Uncle Gene and Aunt Eleanor

As Secretary/Treasurer for the fledgling Kenya Mercy Ministries organization back in 2014, I had the privilege of working closely with Jean in setting up all of the necessary logistics and procedures for the Ministry's financial recording keeping and reporting. What a pleasure it was to work with such a pleasant, knowledgeable, and professional bookkeeper. Although we often worked 'long-distance' by phone, her conversation was always upbeat, cheerful and personable. She was not just a co-worker, but a friend. I pray for the Lord's peace and comfort for her family. I'm sure she's enjoying walking with Jesus!
