Francis Wymond Hurt, Jr., 94, died peacefully at home on August 28th in Chatham, Virginia. He was born in Halls, Tennessee, the only child of the late Pattie Rhea Spence and Francis Wymond Hurt, Sr. He graduated from Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, Tennessee, and attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.
Wymond enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in the Finance Office at The Pentagon in Washington, D.C. during the Korean War. He returned to Tennessee upon discharge and began his career in the home furnishings industry. He and his family later moved to California, where he opened the first offices on the West Coast for Holiday Inn Hotels and furnished the first Inns built there. Upon returning to Memphis, Wymond opened two retail furniture stores and a furniture brokerage and import company. He lived and worked for a number of years in Tupelo, Mississippi before moving to Chatham, Virginia to be near his daughter and her family.
Wymond lived an interesting and active life. He played the trumpet and loved jazz and big band music. He was an avid traveler, gardener, golfer, boater, small-plane pilot, motorcyclist, and car enthusiast. He was a captivating storyteller and the life of the party. An old school gentleman, Wymond was invariably pleasant and had a kind word for everyone.
He was predeceased by his parents and his children’s mother, Joyce Fletcher Voegeli. Survivors include his children, Wymond Fletcher Hurt of Halls, Tennessee, Pattie Kathleen O’Hare of Chatham, Virginia, Jeffrey Charles Hurt of Elkmont, Alabama; seven grandchildren; and eight great- grandchildren.
Visitation at 10:00 a.m. will precede the memorial service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 9, at Chatham Baptist Church, 12 Court Place, Chatham, Virginia, where Wymond was a member. The Rev. Dr. Charles Warnock III will officiate. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Halls, Tennessee.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Wymond’s parents, Pat and Wymond Hurt, Sr., to First Baptist Church, 102 E. Tigrett St., Halls, Tennessee 38040.
