George Louis Babick, age 84, died on November 22, 2017. Beloved son of the late Louis and Angie Peso Babick; loving brother to the late Lorraine Schumacher and great uncle to the late Mark Haugen; adored brother to Ruth Lewis; caring uncle of Suzanne Schumacher Haugen, Darcy Lewis (David) Diggs, Dr. Trevor (Betsy) Lewis, and Scott (Lauren) Lewis; fond uncle to many great nieces and nephews.
A graduate of Hirsch High School, George entered the US Army and served four years in Germany. Upon completion of his service, he enrolled at Drake University and graduated with honors. Post college, he embarked on a successful career in the advertising field working for WTMJ-TV, Milwaukee, WGN-TV, Chicago, Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., The Chicago Tribune Co. and later The Food Network. He was a visionary in the communications field and instrumental in the creation of CNN. While V.P. of Acquisitions for the Tribune Co., he championed the purchase of the Chicago Cubs.
George was a Renaissance man - an avid reader, writer, student of history, music lover, photographer, prolific painter and sports enthusiast. In 2006, George received a Master of Liberal Arts Degree from the University of Chicago. His love of history, specifically military history, led to a long-time membership at the Union League Club of Chicago, where he served as commander of American Legion Post No. 758 for many years. Throughout his travels, he always maintained a residence in Chicago and a boat at Belmont Harbor. He loved taking his family and friends sailing and could often be found at the Columbia Yacht Club. He had a wide array of interests but was happiest when spending time with his longtime companion, Winnie Bixby, and their dog, Sam.

What a great gentleman! He also worked briefly in Boston at WLVI TV aka WKBG...I worked as a sales assistant and he was the general sales manager. He was very kind in his dealings with everyone. And he was instrumental in me staying in broadcasting for 35 years... George touched a lot of lives...and left the world a better place.

George was a warm, brilliant, caring person and had a significant impact on my life. I will always be grateful for the friendship we had over many years and the times we spent together. I did not find out he had passed until months after, but had spoken to him frequently that last year. He was always positive and interested and I will miss him dearly! Great example of a good man, good friend, and business leader!

George has been a friend since Park Manor grade school/Hirsch Hi. I am overwelmed of his many accomplishments. His sister Lorraine was best friends with my cousin Maryland Peterson Miller. He generously let them stay in his apt.. Marylan, was overwelmed with his hospitality. He was a quiet and thoughtful person. He will be missed. Arlene (Horslev) Weir Arlene

Our deepest sympathy goes out to Ruth and family. "Geobab" will be sorely missed. George made me a better person and a better financial executive. A few stories about his absent mindedness: George showed up at the office one day with one brown shoe and one black shoe; on another day he was dressed with tuxedo pants along with a dark suit coat; and one of the best stories is when he couldn't find his rental car in Boston. Marcia and I have many fond memories of visiting George and Winnie in San Diego during our winter getaways.
