George Forest Futrell, age 84, of Castle Hayne, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 9, 2026, in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Born to Roy Lee Vernon Futrell and Virginia Dare Cottle Futrell, who preceded him in death, George lived a life defined by hard work, dedication, and love for his family.
George worked for Superior Carriers for nearly 50 years, traveling across the United States and visiting 47 states throughout his career. He took great pride in his work and the experiences he gained along the way.
A man of strong faith, George served as a deacon at Livingstones Tabernacle and later joined Northside Baptist Church, where he regularly attended Sunday school and services whenever he was home. His faith was an integral part of his life and the guiding principle behind his devotion to family and community.
George had a true passion for racing cars, especially dirt track racing. He also cherished time spent with his sons and his son at heart, Marc, always willing to lend a hand as they tinkered on cars and tackled projects together. Those moments of working side by side created memories that will be treasured forever.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Joyce Arlene Futrell (née Watkins); his sons, Clint Futrell and Adam Futrell (Brandie); his daughter, Virginia Rozalez; his cherished grandchildren, Katelynn Futrell and Zachary Locklear; his oldest sister, Helen Tartt; and many beloved in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends.
George was preceded in death by his parents; his children, Amanda and George Futrell, Jr.; and his siblings, Jack, Gene, R.L., Juanita, and Mary.
Memorial services will be held at Northside Baptist Church in Wilmington, North Carolina, led by Pastor Rob Strickland, at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. Friends are invited to visit with the family one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cape Fear Life Care Center in Wilmington or to Northside Baptist Church, honoring George’s legacy of love, faith, and service.
He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his faith, his love of racing, and, most of all, his devotion to his family. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy will live on in the lives he touched and the memories he helped create.

Had to pleasure to work with Big George for well over 20 years. You could always count on him, even in the worst of times. George talked about Arlene and his kids and you could tell the love he had for his family. We’ve missed him since his retirement and we’ll certainly miss him even more so now. Hold er’ down on the big road, Big George and we’ll see you down the road someday.
