George Lovecchio Obituary

George Sclafani Lovecchio Sr., passed away on Friday, January 23, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was a devoted husband, a loving and steady father, a proud grandfather and great-grandfather, and a cherished brother, uncle, and friend.

George was born in New Orleans and retired to Covington in his later years. As a graduate of St. Aloysius and a former seminarian, George was a family man through and through. He cared deeply for his people, his neighborhood, and doing right by both. He also believed in being practical and saving every penny, sometimes twice. If there was a sensible way to fix something or make it last longer, George already had a way that didn’t need much explaining.

Alongside his father and brothers, George helped build and operate the family’s grocery stores in New Orleans and Kenner and later his well-known deli in Jefferson Parish. He took pride in his work as a butcher and grocer. What began as a family business became neighborhood staples that served generations of families. Through long hours, familiar faces, and genuine care for customers, the Lovecchio family businesses were more than places to shop or eat; they were gathering spots built on trust, consistency, and treating people like family.

George was predeceased by his wife, Carolyn Singletary Lovecchio and his parents, Salvatore Lovecchio and Angelina Sclafani Lovecchio and survived by his brothers, Frank and Salvatore.  He is survived by his children, Salvatore G. (Karen), George S. (Cindy), and Michelle “Missy” Montalbano; his grandchildren, George, Anthony, Ryan, Mia, Brittany, Lauren, and Amber; and his great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and extended family who loved him dearly.

A man of faith, George carried his Catholic beliefs quietly and steadily throughout his life, guided by prayer, humility, and devotion to family. He leaves behind a legacy of love, tradition, and perseverance, and his family takes comfort in knowing he has been welcomed home in peace.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Catholic Funeral Mass at St. Rita Catholic Church, 2729 Lowerline Street, New Orleans, LA. 70125 on Monday, February 2, 2026, at 12:00 P.M.

We were so saddened to hear about George’s passing. We always treasured the times we spent with George and Carol — our dinner group had so many wonderful, fun memories together. George brought so much joy and laughter, and he will truly be missed.
May he rest in peace. Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Papa G was an amazing man. He had a love for his family and life and his faith, which was passed on to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and nephews and nieces. I am good friends with his son Sal and Sal‘s wife Karen. I have had the great privilege to play bunco with the family, which was a while ago, those memories are imprinted on my brain because they were such great fun and good times were had by all. I also really enjoyed it when Sal and Papa G would make their infamous sausage. And like a beautiful Italian family, they shared their bounty with everyone that came across their path and I was lucky to be one of them. Papa G left a Beautiful legacy in his family and friends. My condolences to the family. May the peace that passes all understanding guard y’all’s hearts, in Christ Jesus. Love, Molly

I can remember how big Mr. George’s hands were when I was a five year old sleeping over at George and Sal’s house on Jeff Davis.
