Mr. Grover Calvin Byars, Jr., age 85, of Rome, passed away on Saturday, December 3, 2016, at his residence.
Mr. Byars was born in Floyd County on September 26, 1931, son of the late Grover Calvin Byars, Sr., and the late Gertrude Gresham Byars. He was a graduate of Rome Boy's High School. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Marine Corps from 1949 until 1952, achieving the rank of Sergeant. He was a member of the Second Avenue Baptist Church. Mr. Byars was a former employee of the Georgia Kraft Company, retiring after over 30 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Sue Formby Byars on June 22, 2000, and a brother, William Robert Byars in 2014.
Survivors include his daughter, Kathy Davis, and her husband, Barry, Cartersville; a brother, John Lamar Byars, and his wife, Mary Jane, Rome; a sister-in-law, Helen Byars, Rome; 2 nephews, William Byars, and his wife, Janie, Rome, and Bill Byars, and his wife, Tracie, Cedartown; 2 nieces, Christine Newberry, and her husband, Kenny, Silver Creek, and Jane Stone, and her husband, Lawrence, Rome.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 7, 2016, at 3pm in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Lamar Barden and the Rev. Dan White officiating. Interment will follow in the East View Cemetery with full military honors provided by the American Legion Post # 5 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel on Wednesday from 1pm until time for the service. At other hours, they may be contacted at their respective residences.
Pallbearers serving will be members of the Marine Corps League and are requested to assemble at the funeral home on Wednesday at 2:30pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the William S. Davies Homeless Shelters, Inc., 3 Central Plaza #198, Rome, GA 30161.
Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, has charge of the funeral arrangements.

My dear Mr. Grover C. you will forever be in my heart. God Blessed me by allowing our visit before He called His faithful servant home. I will feel those bear hugs for the rest of my life.
