Hargie Faye Jacobs Savoy, a beloved matriarch, faithful servant and pillar of the Port Arthur
community, passed away on February 19, 2026, in her hometown of Port Arthur, Texas,
surrounded by her family. She was 96 years old. Born on December 30, 1929, in Port Arthur,

faithfully under the leadership of Pastor Randy G. Vaughn. Her life’s work was rooted in
service. She was a proud homemaker, a cashier at Lincoln High School and a dedicated Sunday
School and Vacation Bible School teacher who nurtured generations of children in faith and
character.
In 1986, at the request of Coretta Scott King, Hargie founded the Martin Luther King Jr.
Support Group of Southeast Texas and served as its president for more than three decades.

worship services that became a cornerstone of the community.
Hargie served in numerous civic organizations, including CHRISTUS St. Mary Hospital, the
Art Museum of Southeast Texas, and the Greater Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce. Her
dedication to justice and unity earned her many honors, including the Life Member Award from
the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the Outstanding Texan Award from the Texas
Legislative Black Caucus, and the Freedom Award from the NAACP.She was a lifelong resident of Port Arthur and opened both her home and her heart to history, hosting Coretta Scott King, Dick Gregory, Cornell West and other civil rights leaders within its walls.
Quiet in manner yet powerful in impact, Hargie Faye Savoy moved with grace and purpose. Her
life was a testament to faith, service, and unwavering commitment to community. She

I met Hargie Savoy at The Medical Center of Southeast Texas. When I went into her room in the ER...she said, "oh it's YOU again!!". She was so funny and full of life. She was one of those patients you will always remember. She even sent me a Christmas card that year. Sweetest lady I've had the pleasure to meet. Praying for your family.

Following my return to PA, I remember attending a school board meeting and seeing you for what I remember as the first time. You spoke so powerfully and eloquently and what I later learned was just who you were. Fast forward a few years later and we met in person not realizing that we had an unknown connection. The rest, as they say, is history. I remember the long talks either in person or on the phone. They were always heartfelt and insightful. Rest well! Love, Jacqui
