Mrs. Hattie Mae Williams Cradle peacefully ended a rich and
rewarding life on September 11, 2023 at her home in Charlotte,
North Carolina. She was born in Mecklenburg County on August 21,
1937 to Arthur Williams Sr. and Maria Robertson Williams. “Mae”
as she was affectionately known as was the sixth of eight siblings.
Three sisters and a brother survive her.
At an early age Mae attended Grace AME Zion with her father and
also the United House of Prayer with her Mother where she
faithfully sang with her sisters better known throughout Charlotte
as the “Williams Sisters.” Mae loved to sing. She attended West
Charlotte High School where she was a member of the women’s
Glee Club as well as the school choir. She migrated to New York
after attending Johnson C. Smith University where she met and
married her late husband, David Cradle, Sr. Together they raised
their two beautiful children on Long Island, New York.
After retiring, Mae and David moved back to her hometown of
Charlotte, North Carolina. She once again attended both churches
where she sang with the McCollough Notes of the United House of
Prayer and also with the Cathedral Choir of Grace AME Zion
Church. She served her community in many ways but she truly loved
to fellowship and play her instrument with the African Drummers
and Dancers of the McCrorey YMCA.
Those left to cherish the memories of her life include four siblings,
Arthur Williams, Sr., Mattie Williams Patton (Apostle Robert
Patton, Sr.), Betty Jean Williams Lewis, Brenda Williams Parris and
special sister Jacqueline Bryant; two children, Stacey Cradle-Fisher
of Charlotte, North Carolina and David Cradle, Jr. of Lancaster,
South Carolina; 8 grandchildren, JaQuinton Blair, Iman Fisher,
Laquanesha Mobley, KeDavidion Talford, Ian Fisher, Omious Cradle,
Kamron Cradle and Damarion George; seven great-grandchildren;
and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and dear friends.
