Mr. Howard Garner Bales, son of the late Andrew Lee and Elizabeth Randall Bales, was
born on May 2, 1929, and he departed this life on November 29, 2019 at the age of 90.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Bolton, whom he married on July 2, 1955. Other
survivors include one son, H.G. (and Alice) Bales of Somerset, KY; two grandchildren, Jace
Bales and Zach (and Melissa) Bales all of Somerset, KY; one sister-in-law, Betty Bolton;
two brothers-in-law, Bob Bolton and Lou Couch; and a host of nieces and nephews and
other relatives and friends who mourn his passing.
Other than his parents, he was also preceded in death by the following siblings: Elva (and
Leonard) Sears, Wilma (and Jim) Miller, Verna Lee (and Charles) Wilson, Geraldine Couch,
J. E. Bales, Randall D. Bales, and Lindsey (and Norma) Bales. Howard was also preceded
in death by the following in-laws, Othello (and John) Osborne, Clarnell Bolton, Coy (and
Lucille) Bolton, Oral (and Nora) Bolton, Fern Bolton, and Donald Bolton.
Howard was a proud graduate of Shopville High School in 1947. He then attended Eastern
State Teachers College and returned to teach one year at Shopville Elementary School
before accepting the Postmaster position in Shopville, Kentucky. Thereafter, he served in
the United States Army during the Korean War. Following his service, Howard returned to
Shopville and continued his Postmaster duties as the owner/operator of Bales Grocery for
more than 40 years. He and his wife, Bonnie, have maintained a number of other
businesses in the Shopville area for many years.
Howard was a member of the Fellowship Methodist Church and was a staple in the
Shopville Community. He was a kind person who loved his family and community and will
be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 1, 2019 at the Chapel of the
Pulaski Funeral Home with Bro. Kevin Bullock and Bro. Jason Elam officiating. Burial will
follow in the Fellowship - Burkhart Cemetery.
The family of Mr. Howard Bales will receive friends at the Pulaski Funeral Home from 11:00
a.m. Sunday until the time of services. Pulaski Funeral Home is honored to be assisting the
family of Mr. Howard Bales during this time.
