Obituary for Jack “Jake” Robert Michalek

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jack (Jake) Robert Michalek, who died peacefully at his home on Saturday, December 27, surrounded by his loving family. He passed in the home he built and cherished—a place that reflected his hard work, pride, and love of family.

Born on July 2, 1939, to John and Esther Michalek, Jack was a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend. He may have had a tough exterior and thick skin, but those who knew him best understood that beneath it all was a soft heart. Jack would do anything for anyone—no questions asked. He was known for his quick wit, sharp humor, and unmistakable personality that left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Jack is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Judy; his children, Marlo (Brad Fogel) and Rochelle; his sister, Gloria Johnson; his sisters-in-law, Paula Ahlgren (Bill) and Carol Carson; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Esther Michalek (Homerding); his sister,Shirley, and her husband, Paul Stiglic; and his brothers-in-law, Jerry Johnson and Denny Carson.

Jack was a proud member of the Lemont High School Class of 1957. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served for two years. Upon returning home, he worked for Dell-Webb Construction before beginning a remarkable career with Pepper Construction in 1965.

Over the next 43 years, Jack built more than structures—he built trust, relationships, and a reputation for excellence. As a carpenter and later Senior Superintendent, he helped construct major office buildings, banks, and hospitals throughout the region. His final project was Edward Hospital, where he proudly built the Heart Hospital. Jack took immense pride in his work, his team, and the relationships he formed with clients, always confident that choosing Pepper Construction was the right decision. He retired at the age of 70, proud to be part of the Pepper Construction family and the loyal client following he helped create.

Jack was always on the move and had a deep love for the outdoors. He could often be found golfing with his buddies, meticulously mowing the lawn or tending to his landscaping, cheering on the Lemont High School Football Team, washing and waxing his cars and truck, or enjoying time with friends and family—especially alongside Judy.

Jack and Judy were married on May 26, 1962, and shared more than 63 years of love, laughter, arguments, and mutual tolerance of each other’s quirks—proof of a strong and enduring partnership. They built a beautiful life together, filled with family, shared homes, and unforgettable moments. If there was music, they were the first on the dance floor. From the Twist to country line dancing to a polka, they always danced together—as one.

A lifelong sports fan, Jack’s loyalty never wavered, regardless of their record or the many seasons that followed. His love for the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Blackhawks was steadfast and true.

Jack lived life on his own terms. We are forever grateful for the time we had with him, the memories we shared, and the impact he made on all who knew and loved him.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at SS. Cyril & Methodius Church 608 Sobieski St. Lemont, IL. Visitation will take place at the church from 10:00–11:00 a.m., followed by a Mass at 11 a.m. in his honor.
